New Helicopters For Presidential Fleet Face Challenges On White House Lawn

The introduction of the new $5 billion VH-92 Patriot helicopters, designed specifically for presidential use, has encountered significant challenges.

President Joe Biden's new helicopters, developed by Lockheed, are restricted to paved areas as they damage the South Lawn's grass at the White House due to intense heat and powerful rotor wash.

According to Daily Mail, the VH-92 Patriot helicopters began experiencing issues with turf scorching as early as 2018. This problem, first noted during initial operational assessments, has led to the helicopters utilizing paved runways solely for landing and taking off at the White House.

Helicopter Development and Delivery Milestones

Lockheed, a defense contractor, has successfully delivered 20 VH-92 helicopters so far. This delivery is part of a program valued at around $5 billion, encompassing a planned total of 23 helicopters for presidential duties. These deliveries have been overseen by Sikorsky, a subsidiary of Lockheed dedicated to producing these specialized aircraft.

According to Sikorsky President Paul Lemmo, the VH-92 Patriot helicopters officially became operational for certain presidential missions.

These missions have utilized the new VH-92 and the older VH-3D Sea King models. This mix is due to the ongoing adjustments needed to fully integrate the new models into the fleet.

Exploring Solutions for Lawn Damage

Lockheed has been proactive and is anticipating a permanent solution to the lawn scorching problem. Melissa Chadwick, spokesperson for Lockheed, confirmed that the company has devised a potential solution.

"Lockheed has delivered 20 VH-92 helicopters under the $5 billion program," Chadwick told Bloomberg, also stating, "the company believes it's found a fix and will start testing soon." Testing of this new modification is expected to start soon, with the goal of eventually allowing the helicopters to use the South Lawn once again.

The VH-92 Patriot is the latest entrant into a long lineage of presidential helicopters. The first model, introduced in 1975, carried a distinctive white top and green body. Marine Helicopter Squadron One (HMX-1), based in Marine Corps Air Facility Quantico in Virginia, operates these helicopters and is closely involved in resolving the current issues.

Presidential Helicopter Historical Context

The tradition of presidential helicopter transport began with President Dwight D. Eisenhower on July 12, 1957, marking a significant advance in presidential mobility.

Over the years, the models have evolved, culminating in the adoption of the VH-92 Patriots, which started their production cycle in 2019. Sikorsky will deliver the prototype by November 2021.

According to the Government Accountability Office (GAO), each VH-92A helicopter costs an estimated $218 million, totaling the entire program's cost to approximately $5 billion.

Sikorsky aims to complete the production of the final 23rd helicopter by the summer of 2024, marking the end of this current phase of upgrading the presidential air transport fleet.

Looking Forward to Full Integration

With testing underway for solutions to protect the integrity of the South Lawn, optimism remains high that a functional fix will soon allow the full return of helicopter operations directly on the grass.

Meanwhile, the VH-92 Patriot continues to fulfill its role in tandem with the VH-3D Sea King, smoothly transitioning into its role as the primary aircraft for presidential transport.

Lemmo expressed confidence in the full integration of the VH-92 into presidential operations. "Right now, there’s a mix of the new aircraft and the old aircraft, and over the next year or so we expect the VH-92 to take over completely," he stated during a Connecticut business forum.

The successful merging of new technology with the operational requirements of presidential transport remains a priority for both Lockheed and the Marine Corps, ensuring the president’s safety and the operational efficiency of his transport means.

As America's leaders look to the future, the evolution of presidential helicopters continues to symbolize both technological advancement and tradition.
