12-year-old school shooting victim Sophia Forchas transitions to rehab after critical injury

Twelve-year-old Sophia Forchas, who suffered a gunshot wound to the head during a mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, is showing significant recovery and is expected to be moved to an inpatient rehabilitation center.

Sophia’s recovery marks a hopeful turning point in the aftermath of a violent school shooting that left two students dead and more than a dozen others injured last month, The Christian Post reported.

The shooting took place at Annunciation Catholic School, a private institution in Minneapolis, where Sophia was among the victims. The attack, carried out by a trans-identified individual, stunned the community with its violence and tragic impact. The assailant reportedly wrote about demonic oppression before the incident occurred.

During the early aftermath of the shooting, Sophia was rushed to Hennepin County Medical Center in critical condition. Her injuries, particularly the gunshot wound to her head, placed her at high risk. On September 5, Dr. Walt Galicich, her neurosurgeon, publicly stated that Sophia might become the third fatality from the event.

Despite that grim forecast, signs of hope soon followed. Dr. Galicich mentioned “rays of hope” during his press conference, suggesting the possibility of a turnaround. Less than a week later, an update revealed that Sophia’s condition had improved from critical to serious.

Health Milestone Brings Community Together

Following weeks of intensive care, Sophia’s family and medical team are now preparing for her transition to inpatient rehabilitation. An update provided earlier this week stated she is expected to be discharged soon from Hennepin County Medical Center. Her treatment going forward will focus on long-term recovery and neurological rehabilitation.

According to her family, Sophia is showing unmistakable signs of progress. They have described her healing as both inspiring and miraculous. "Sophia continues to make steady progress, showing promising signs of neurological recovery," read one family update.

Her strength and determination have not gone unnoticed. One post to her GoFundMe campaign emphasized that "her resilience continues to inspire hope at every step," reflecting the emotional journey of her recovery. Her family continues to express deep gratitude for her survival and the support they have received from the community and medical staff at HCMC.

Support for Sophia and Her Family Grows

Support for Sophia has extended far beyond Minneapolis, as evidenced by the outpouring of donations. A GoFundMe page set up to assist with medical expenses, trauma counseling, and the family’s lost income has raised more than $1.1 million as of Thursday afternoon. The campaign provides resources not only for Sophia’s rehabilitation but also for her brother, who attends the same school and witnessed the attack.

The funds will help pay for counseling services, family support mechanisms, and time away from work for those closest to her. Donations from around the country have poured in, offering both financial assistance and words of encouragement. One update on the fundraising page declared, “Sophia is winning! Your prayers are working.”

Her family believes that the support, both spiritual and material, has played a significant role in Sophia’s journey. "It is by God’s will that she has come this far," they wrote. They also credited the medical team at HCMC for their unwavering dedication, describing the staff as “extraordinary” and “world-class.”

Recovery Also Brings Reflection and Gratitude

In earlier updates, Sophia’s family shared their belief that divine intervention helped guide her through the worst. “There are simply too many [factors] to be dismissed as coincidence,” the family stated, pointing to moments they feel helped protect her life. They described her healing journey as a testament to faith and the power of communal prayer.

While she continues to face extensive therapy and long-term challenges, Sophia’s progress has inspired those following her story. Her family describes her as “strong, brave, and unwavering” in her recovery efforts. That sentiment echoes the hopes of many who have watched her recovery unfold over the weeks.

Though her condition has dramatically improved, doctors caution that the rehabilitation process will be long and complex. Sophia's ongoing needs will be met with a multidisciplinary treatment approach as she works toward further neurological improvement and independence.

Community Remembers Victims, Looks Forward

As attention focuses on Sophia’s recovery, the community continues to grieve the loss of two students who died during the attack. In total, more than a dozen others were injured in the shooting. Local officials, clergy, and students have held multiple vigils and support meetings in the aftermath of the tragedy.

Officials have not yet announced further details surrounding the investigation into the shooter’s motive. However, information released has confirmed that the attacker was identified as transgender and reportedly left messages referring to demonic forces before the incident.

As the Minneapolis community works toward healing, many view Sophia’s progress as a symbol of endurance. Her transfer to a rehabilitation center represents not just a medical step, but an emotional one for her family and supporters who have rallied around her since the harrowing event.
