Colorado High Court Welcomes New Chief Justice Monica M. Márquez

In a significant judicial development, Justice Monica M. Márquez was inaugurated as the chief justice of the Colorado Supreme Court, heralding a series of firsts in the state's legal history.

Justice Márquez's ascension marks her as the first Latina and the third woman to lead the Colorado Supreme Court, alongside being the longest-serving openly LGBTQ justice in the U.S., as KDVR reports.

The swearing-in ceremony, held on a Friday, saw Márquez take the highest judicial mantle in the state from her predecessor, Justice Brian D. Boatright.

This transition follows the new tenure rules approved by the justices in 2020, which now limit the term of a chief justice to three years.

Trailblazing Path to Leadership

Before her elevation to this prestigious position, Márquez had a substantial legal career that began when Gov. Bill Ritter appointed her to the Colorado Supreme Court in November 2010.

Her appointment followed the retirement of Chief Justice Mary Mullarkey. Having served more than a decade in Colorado’s highest court, her experience and legal acumen positioned her as a prime candidate for leadership.

Her wide-ranging legal background includes stints under two Colorado attorneys general and clerkships in both the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts.

Moreover, Márquez has practiced commercial litigation and employment law, providing her with a complex understanding of the intricacies of legal disputes and workplace issues.

Legacy of Judicial Excellence and Reform

Chief Justice Márquez’s judicial philosophy and managerial acumen are set to influence a new era in the Colorado Supreme Court.

Her father, Jose D.L. Márquez, also made history as the first Latino judge in the Mesa County District Court and the Colorado Court of Appeals, hinting at a legacy of breaking barriers and setting legal precedents in Colorado’s judiciary.

In her inaugural speech, Chief Justice Márquez expressed profound gratitude towards her predecessor, Justice Boatright.

She acknowledged his contributions, noting, “He has overseen significant changes to the administration of the branch in recent years, and his humble leadership has been a model for all of us. As he now hands me the baton, I am ready to carry forward the momentum his leadership has created.”

Advancing Judicial Integrity and Public Trust

Chief Justice Márquez’s vision for the Colorado Supreme Court revolves around upholding judicial integrity and fostering public trust. She outlined her commitment to enhancing the Judicial Branch's role as a beacon of justice and an "exceptional workplace."

Her focus will also include strengthening collaborations with government and community partners, crucial for effectively implementing justice and ensuring that the judicial system serves the public diligently.

Building Bridges in Judicial Service

Márquez’s tenure begins at a time when public confidence in judicial systems nationally requires reaffirmation. Her historical appointment not only serves as an emblem of progress but also injects renewed vigor into the efforts to enhance justice delivery in Colorado.

Reflecting on her role and its significance, Chief Justice Márquez emphasized the importance of community and partnerships in fulfilling the judiciary's highest mission -- to serve the people of Colorado.

Throughout her career, Monica M. Márquez has exemplified robust legal leadership and a commitment to justice, making her role as chief justice a hopeful chapter for Colorado's judicial history.

Her multifaceted legal expertise and historic tenure will likely usher in notable reforms and advancements for the state’s supreme judicial institution.
