CatholicVote Launches Campaign Against VP Harris Over Migrant Tragedy

An aggressive new ad campaign by CatholicVote has taken aim at Vice President Kamala Harris, spotlighting what the group describes as severe border management failures connected with a young migrant girl's tragic death in Texas.

A six-figure campaign in Arizona has placed a spotlight on the Harris' border policies following the rape and murder of an 11-year-old migrant girl, as Breitbart reports.

Painful Context Behind Ad

In August 2023, the community of Pasadena, Texas, was shocked by the gruesome discovery of 11-year-old Maria Gonzalez.

Her father found her raped and strangled to death, hidden under a bed on Aug. 12. The perpetrator, identified as 18-year-old Juan Carlos Garcia-Rodriguez, was an illegal immigrant from Guatemala, residing in the same apartment complex as Maria's family.

Garcia-Rodriguez entered the U.S. under distressing circumstances, arriving as an Unaccompanied Alien Child (UAC) in January of 2023. At 17, he was quickly turned over to Health and Human Services but was later sponsored to stay in Louisiana while awaiting a U.S. court date.

Regrettably, federal oversight appeared minimal. Garcia-Rodriguez, now 18, had little supervision, typifying broader concerns about how the U.S. manages such migrant cases.

A Look at Gonzalez's Journey and U.S. Border Policies

The Gonzalez family faced a host of dilemmas after migrating to the U.S. in 2019. They were part of the wave influenced by border policies that encouraged family separations, which saw Carmelo Gonzalez, Maria's father, isolated from his wife and other children.

These policies placed the Gonzalez family within the complex frameworks of U.S. immigration laws, which CatholicVote claims have not sufficiently protected vulnerable migrants or the domestic population from unforeseen tragedies.

CatholicVote Challenges Vice President Harris's Role

CatholicVote's campaign directly challenges Harris, who has overseen collaborations with Mexico and the Northern Triangle for three years. Her role in border management is under heavy scrutiny in the wake of Maria's death. The ad starkly portrays her administration's policies as failures that have led to severe consequences such as the death of U.S. citizens and perilous circumstances for migrants.

Excerpts from the campaign video are particularly pointed, with phrases like "Raped," and "Strangled to death" evoking strong emotions. They emphasize Harris's duration in charge with captions such as "In charge of the border for 3 years," spotlighting what the organization views as deep-seated issues within current border management.

The concluding message in the ad is a stark criticism: "Protect the vulnerable, not the votes," suggesting that political motivations have overtaken essential human rights concerns.

Community and Political Reactions to The Campaign

Brian Burch, Vice President of CatholicVote, has vocalized the organization's dismay, stating, "Vice President Kamala Harris’s shameful mismanagement of the border is morally indefensible." He further suggests that Harris' policies have prioritized political gains over the safety and well-being of both American citizens and migrants.

Burch's criticism extends to the broader socio-political ramifications, asserting, "While cartels, sex traffickers, and drug dealers profit, real people, including children, are suffering." He contends this situation highlights a severe disconnect between policy and its human impacts.

Burch concluded by expressing the sentiments of many in his community, revealing that "Catholics are disgusted by this moral catastrophe."

The Broader Implications of the Migration Debate

The narrative advanced by CatholicVote’s campaign resonates at a time of ongoing debate about border control, migration policies, and their human cost. It casts a detailed spotlight not only on tragic personal stories but also on broader systemic issues that could have national policy implications.

The tragic case of Maria Gonzalez, as presented in this campaign, has become a pivotal example in discussions about the efficacy and ethics of U.S. immigration policies, particularly those under Vice President Harris's oversight.

This multi-faceted discourse involves not just policymakers but also diverse communities across the U.S., stimulating discussions about necessary reforms in immigration laws and practices.

In conclusion, the CatholicVote campaign reflects an increasingly urgent dialogue about border management, underscoring the intersection of policy, human rights, and political accountability. The ad aims not only to provoke thought but also to motivate changes that would prevent future tragedies akin to that suffered by the Gonzalez family.
