Teamsters President Holds Off Endorsement Following Harris Meeting

The Teamsters union, led by President Sean O'Brien, has refrained from endorsing a presidential candidate following a meeting with Vice President Kamala Harris at their Washington, D.C. headquarters.

According to a Washington Examiner report, O'Brien emphasized the importance of considering the diverse political affiliations of the union's 1.3 million members before making any endorsement decisions.

The meeting, which took place on September 16, 2024, was closed to the press and public. O'Brien stated that the discussion with Harris focused on Teamster issues and the significance of the union's members in the political process.

He highlighted the unique nature of the Teamsters union compared to other labor organizations, noting its representation of registered Democrats, Republicans, and independents.

Teamsters' Unique Approach To Political Endorsements

The Teamsters union stands out among major non-police unions for its approach to political endorsements.

O'Brien stated:

We talked about Teamster issues. We talked about how important our members are in this process, the 1.3 million members and what their wants and needs are. There’s no secret that the Teamsters union is very different than most unions, and I mean that with total respect.

While most other unions have already backed the Democratic ticket, O'Brien continues to withhold support, prioritizing the interests of his members over party affiliations.

O'Brien's stance is particularly noteworthy given his recent appearances at political events. He spoke at the Republican National Convention in July but was not given the opportunity to address the Democratic National Convention the following month.

The union leader emphasized that the Teamsters' endorsement process differs from that of other unions. He stated that many international unions endorsed early when President Biden was still in the race, but the Teamsters are taking a more deliberate approach.

Member Polling And Decision-Making Process

The Teamsters are currently conducting a poll of their 1.3 million members regarding the presidential endorsement. O'Brien announced that the results of this survey will be released to the public later in the week.

However, O'Brien clarified that the polling results would not be the sole determining factor in the union's endorsement decision. He stated that while the polling will be "a significant part" of the process, it will not dictate the final direction.

The union's membership, primarily consisting of truckers and UPS drivers, is believed to be more receptive to former President Donald Trump than other labor organizations. This demographic makeup adds complexity to the endorsement decision.

Historical Context And Current Considerations

The Teamsters have a history of endorsing candidates from both major political parties. In previous election cycles, they supported Republican presidents such as Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, and George H. W. Bush. The union abstained from endorsing in the 1996 election before backing Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden in more recent years.

Despite this varied history, O'Brien recently described the Teamsters as "a very, very Democratic union." He has also been critical of Trump, particularly regarding comments the former president made to Elon Musk about strikes, which O'Brien characterized as "economic terrorism."

The meeting with Vice President Harris had been in the works for weeks, finally occurring just weeks before Election Day. Harris's staff reported that the meeting was the only event on her calendar for the day.

Implications For The 2024 Presidential Race

The Teamsters' endorsement, or lack thereof, could have significant implications for the 2024 presidential race. With 1.3 million members, the union's support could potentially sway a substantial number of votes.

O'Brien's commitment to transparency in the endorsement process is evident in his decision to release the polling results publicly. He stated that this move is intended to eliminate any doubts about the membership's preferences.

The union's approach to this endorsement decision reflects the complex political landscape of 2024, where traditional party loyalties are being challenged by a focus on specific policy issues and worker interests.

Conclusion

The Teamsters union, under Sean O'Brien's leadership, is taking a measured approach to presidential endorsement in the 2024 election. Following a meeting with Vice President Kamala Harris, O'Brien emphasized the importance of considering the diverse political views of the union's 1.3 million members. The union is conducting a membership poll, but O'Brien stressed that this will be just one factor in the final decision. Given the union's size and influence, the Teamsters' eventual endorsement or decision to withhold support could have significant implications for the presidential race.
