Ex-Atlanta Hawk AJ Griffin Departs NBA For Faith-Based Life

At just 21, former Atlanta Hawks forward Adrian Griffin Jr. has decided to retire from professional basketball to pursue a spiritual calling.

Announcing his retirement via a heartfelt YouTube video, Griffin cited a divine call to deepen his Christian faith as the reason behind his decision, the Christian Post reported.

Adrian Griffin Jr. stepped into the professional basketball spotlight when the Atlanta Hawks drafted him 16th overall in the 2022 NBA Draft. With a promising career ahead, Griffin quickly made a name for himself as a dynamic forward, demonstrating skill and potential on the court. His tenure with the Hawks, however, would be short-lived, as he was traded to the Houston Rockets in June 2024.

After relocating to Houston, Griffin participated in the NBA Summer League, where he posted averages of 11.6 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.2 steals over five games, logging 24.6 minutes per game. Despite these respectable statistics, the Rockets released Griffin shortly after the league concluded.

The Announcement of a New Beginning

Griffin revealed his decision to leave the NBA in a YouTube video. In the video, he expressed profound gratitude to his supporters and the NBA community. “Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this journey,” Griffin said. “As I step out of one season of my life, I’m excited to step into a new one with my Lord and Savior.”

The young forward detailed his spiritual journey in the video, highlighting a transformative experience at Midwest Believers Church in Champaign, Illinois. This moment of reflection occurred about a year ago following the tragic and untimely death of his young nephew, Jayce. The event had a significant emotional and spiritual impact on Griffin, which contributed to his eventual decision.

From the Basketball Court to Church Services

Griffin's shift from the basketball court to full-time Christian service is not entirely without precedent in his life. His father, Adrian Griffin Sr., also has strong ties to both professional basketball, having been a player and later a coach, and to personal faith. This dual influence appears to have left a lasting impression on the younger Griffin.

Sharing his plans, Griffin expressed enthusiasm for his new path. “I’m looking forward to the plans God has for me up ahead, to share His good news of salvation and a closer relationship with Jesus,” he elaborated. The decision to step away from a lucrative and promising sports career has indeed been met with surprise, but Griffin remains resolute.

Encouragement Through Faith

In his announcement, Griffin also aimed to inspire others with his decision. “I hope this video encourages others to take a leap of faith, with trusting in God and giving Him your full yes in whatever that may look like to you,” he said during the video. Sharing a quote from Hebrews 11:6, he affirmed his commitment to his faith, which underscored his life-altering decision.

Reflecting on his brief but impactful NBA stint, Griffin took the opportunity to extend his gratitude. “I just want to thank the NBA as well. Thank everyone who has allowed me to show my gifts of basketball to the world,” he mentioned. His appreciation extends to all who have supported him through his sports career.

As Griffin turns the page to focus entirely on his faith and spiritual growth, he leaves behind a professional career that many athletes aspire to but few achieve. His bold choice reflects a personal calling that transcends the boundaries of basketball, pointing towards a journey of spiritual fulfillment and service.
