Vatican Withdraws Palestinian Keffiyeh From Nativity Amid Criticism

The Vatican recently removed a Nativity scene that featured baby Jesus on a Palestinian keffiyeh after facing backlash.

The scene, intended to represent Bethlehem, sparked controversy for its perceived political symbolism, The Christian Post reported.

On December 7th, the “Nativity of Bethlehem 2024” scene was unveiled in the Paul VI Hall, featuring baby Jesus depicted with a keffiyeh, a symbol of Palestinian nationalism. Reactions were mixed, with some viewing it as a bold artistic choice, while others saw it as an inappropriate politicization of a religious display.

That day, Pope Francis prayed before the Nativity scene and met with the artists and donors behind this year’s Vatican Christmas decorations. Palestinian artists Johny Andonia and Faten Nastas Mitwasi created the scene to showcase their cultural heritage while contributing to the Vatican's festive display.

Removal Of The Keffiyeh Nativity Raises Questions

The Nativity scene was removed from public view by December 11, just days after its unveiling. The Vatican provided no official explanation, sparking speculation about the intersection of art, religion, and politics.

Funded by the Higher Presidential Committee for Church Affairs in Palestine and the Palestinian Embassy to the Vatican, the project reflected significant Palestinian involvement. While intended to promote goodwill, it instead highlighted the complex link between cultural representation and political implications.

Reactions From Jewish Organizations To The Nativity Scene

The decision to include a keffiyeh in the Nativity scene drew swift backlash from various Jewish groups, who felt the scene was used to make a political statement.

The American Jewish Committee openly expressed their disappointment, stating, “We are disappointed and troubled that a meaningful religious tradition has been politicized in this way.”

Further adding to the controversy, the group StopAntisemitism accused the display of attempting to rewrite history by presenting Jesus as Palestinian, akin to historical misrepresentations by other regimes.

"The lies may shape-shift, but the centuries-old hatred towards the Jewish people continues," they commented, highlighting the emotional and historical weight such symbols can carry.

Despite these tensions, Pope Francis has continued his advocacy for peace in affected regions. Earlier in December, he addressed the donors of the Nativity scene, speaking passionately against the ongoing violence and the proliferation of the arms industry.

“Enough with wars, enough of violence!” he proclaimed, also criticizing the profit motives behind weapon sales, “You know that one of the most profitable investments is in the weapons industry? They earn money to kill. But why? No more wars!”

Pope Francis’s Continued Advocacy For Peace

Pope Francis has previously met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to discuss peace efforts in the Holy Land, part of his broader mediation to encourage dialogue between Israel and Palestine.

He also called for the release of hostages taken by Hamas during the October 7, 2023 attack, while addressing Israel's military response. Israel has rejected claims of genocide related to its actions, which have caused significant casualties on both sides.

The Vatican's decision to feature, then remove, the keffiyeh-wrapped depiction of baby Jesus reflects the delicate balance between cultural expression and the interpretation of religious symbols in a politically charged environment.

While the artist intended to honor their heritage and promote peace, the global reaction highlights the complex relationship between symbolism, politics, and religious sentiment today.
