Young Christian Girl Returns Home After Forced Conversion In Pakistan

In a dramatic escape, Muskan Salman, a 15-year-old Catholic girl from Pakistan's Sindh Province, returned to her family after being abducted and forcibly married.

Muskan Salman's abduction has brought attention to the plight of minority girls in Pakistan, the Christian Post reported.

On March 11, Arsalan Ali abducted Muskan from her home in Tando Ghulam Ali, Badin District. He forced her to convert to Islam and presented a forged marriage certificate falsely declaring her age as 19 to circumvent the legal marriage age of 18 in Sindh Province.

Muskan’s family, distressed by her sudden disappearance, lodged a First Information Report accusing Ali of kidnapping. The legal system responded sluggishly, which intensified the family’s anguish.

Christian Lawyer Steps Forward to Assist in Legal Battle

Muskan's father sought the assistance of a Christian attorney, Luke Victor, based in Karachi, who helped navigate the complexities of Pakistani legal processes in such sensitive cases. Victor arranged for the family to safely travel to Karachi amid threats from Ali.

"Ali and his accomplices started searching for Muskan soon after she went missing—they also contacted the police, but fortunately for us, I knew a senior police officer in Badin, and he promised to facilitate the family in getting a safe passage out of the area," said Luke Victor.

Ali issued multiple threats during the journey to Karachi, creating a perilous situation. However, the family safely arrived and took refuge in a safe house, where Muskan freely shared her harrowing ordeal.

A Testimony of Courage and Resilience in Karachi

Once in Karachi, Muskan disavowed her forced marriage and conversion in a signed statement. "The wait was agonizing," Luke Victor recalled. "We moved them to a safe house where Muskan shared her story with us. She spoke of the fear and pain she endured, but also of her unwavering faith and hope for freedom. Her courage and resilience are a testament to her strength and the support of her loving family."

Victor also highlighted the challenges faced in the courts: "The police were looking to get our case discharged because Muskan was an adult and had converted and married Ali willingly." However, the legal team countered this by demanding a review of her birth documents, school records, and a medical examination to verify her age.

On December 3, a judge from Badin District recognized the gravity of the accusations and the supporting documents provided, ordering a new police investigation into the circumstances of her marriage and her actual age.

Escaping to Safety and Pursuing Justice

On December 15, Muskan escaped and finally reunited with her family. Her return not only brought relief but also marked a significant victory for those fighting against forced conversions and marriages in minority communities.

"Muskan’s return is nothing short of a miracle," commented Luke Victor on the successful escape and reunion. The legal struggles are far from over, as the team prepares to challenge the initial claims about her age and the legality of the marriage under the Sindh Child Marriage Restraint Act of 2014.

"She has also categorically denied that she converted to Islam and married Ali willingly," added Victor, emphasizing the importance of respecting Muskan's voice and agency in these proceedings.

Hope and Resolve in the Fight Against Forced Conversions

Muskan's plight and subsequent liberation have illuminated the broader issue of forced conversions and marriages across Pakistan, particularly among minority communities. The Rev. Maqsood Kamil remarked, "Muskan’s return is a beacon of hope for many, a reminder that even in the darkest times, miracles can happen."

As the legal battle continues, the focus remains on protecting Muskan and ensuring such violations of human rights are addressed. The case has become a landmark in discussions about minority rights and the enforcement of existing laws to protect underage and minority girls in Pakistan.

The international community watches closely as Muskan Salman's courage becomes a symbol of hope and steadfastness in the face of systemic oppression and injustice.
