Pastor Arrested After Domestic Dispute With Wife And Daughter

Josh Lough, a senior pastor at Grace Bible Church in Canal Winchester, Ohio, was taken into custody following allegations of domestic violence involving his wife and daughter on Dec. 8, 2024.

Lough’s arrest stemmed from an incident at his home where police documented visible injuries on both his wife and daughter, The Christian Post reported.

Police arrived at the Lough residence around 11 p.m. in response to a call reporting a disturbance. Officers reportedly heard screaming from inside the house upon their arrival. Inside, they found Lough running down the stairs, where he admitted to an argument with his wife but denied any physical altercation.

Police Respond To Late-Night Call

According to statements, Lough attributed the argument to his wife's mental health challenges. He claimed that no one had been struck, asserting that both he and his wife had merely “grabbed each other.” However, TL, one of Lough’s daughters, provided a different account.

TL told officers that she heard a loud noise upstairs before witnessing her father grabbing her mother. She intervened by slapping him, which, she said, led him to slap her back. Concerned for her family's safety, TL decided to call the authorities.

Police documented injuries on both the mother and daughter during their investigation. These observations contributed to Lough’s arrest at the scene. He was later released on his recognizance and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 7, 2025.

Church Removes Pastor’s Profile

Following the arrest, Grace Bible Church removed Lough’s profile from its official website. The church has not issued a public statement about the incident or its implications for Lough’s role within the congregation.

The arrest has sparked interest because of Lough’s prior public sermons emphasizing the responsibilities of husbands. In a May 2023 Mother’s Day sermon, he stated that husbands are accountable for their wives' spiritual and behavioral conditions, likening it to the responsibility parents have for their children.

“Because we are responsible for the spiritual condition of our wives in the same way that parents are responsible for the spiritual condition of their children,” Lough said during that sermon. He further suggested that a husband’s criticisms of his wife are ultimately a reflection of his failings.

Details Of The Pastor’s Teachings

During the same sermon, Lough appeared to address marital dissatisfaction. He suggested that men are to blame when their wives exhibit negative behaviors, stating, “When we criticize our wives and say, ‘I don’t like the way that she is,’ we’re criticizing ourselves.”

Lough’s teachings on marriage and family life have now drawn scrutiny in light of the allegations against him. His assertions about spiritual leadership within families contrast sharply with the accusations of violence and discord in his own home.

As a senior pastor, Lough’s academic background includes studies at Moody Bible Institute and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He has been a prominent figure at Grace Bible Church, but his future with the congregation remains uncertain.

Community Reactions And Legal Proceedings

The community has yet to release significant public reactions to Lough’s arrest. The allegations raise questions about the interplay between Lough’s public teachings and private conduct.

Lough’s next court appearance, scheduled for Jan. 7, 2025, is expected to bring further developments. His legal team has not released any statements regarding the charges, and it remains unclear how Lough intends to address the allegations.

In domestic disputes, police typically assess visible injuries and witness statements to determine whether an arrest is warranted. In this case, the documented injuries on both Lough’s wife and daughter appear to have played a key role in the decision to arrest him.

Implications For Leadership And Accountability

The arrest raises broader discussions about accountability within leadership roles, particularly in faith-based communities. As a pastor, Lough’s personal life is likely to be closely examined by his congregation and the wider public.

While Grace Bible Church has yet to issue a statement, the removal of Lough’s profile suggests a desire to distance the institution from the controversy. It remains to be seen whether Lough will continue in his role or face disciplinary actions from the church’s leadership.

As the case progresses, more details may emerge about the events leading to Lough’s arrest. The allegations against him have already prompted significant attention, particularly in light of his public emphasis on the role of husbands in maintaining family harmony.

Domestic violence incidents, especially involving prominent community figures, often highlight the complexities of private and public personas. Lough’s arrest is likely to spark ongoing conversations about the responsibilities of leadership, accountability, and the challenges of addressing mental health within families.
