Pastor Jon Weece to Step Down at Southland Church

Jon Weece, the influential senior pastor at Southland Christian Church, has declared he will resign from his position by January 2026.

During a recent sermon, Jon Weece announced his intent to step down as senior pastor to assume the role of a regular congregation member, endorsing Scott Nickell as his successor, the Christian Post reported.

Jon Weece’s Long Tenure at Southland Christian Church

Weece first joined Southland Christian Church in Lexington, Kentucky, as a teaching pastor in 2000. After serving in this capacity for three years, the church appointed him as the lead pastor in 2003. Under his leadership, the church saw significant growth and community impact.

Over the years, Weece became a pivotal figure in the church’s development, guiding spiritual programs and outreach initiatives. His leadership style and dedication shaped the church’s direction and influence in the community.

On January 19, during a heartfelt sermon, Weece shared his decision to resign, revealing that he had made the plan in alignment with the church elders, who had been part of the discussion since 2021.

Scott Nickell Endorsed as the Successor

Scott Nickell, currently a member of the church’s leadership team, has received Weece’s endorsement as the suitable successor. Nickell, with an extensive family background in ministry, is recognized for his deep understanding of church dynamics and leadership challenges.

Nickell expressed his awareness of the unique pressures and responsibilities of leading a church. He emphasized the importance of timing and readiness, highlighting his journey toward feeling a strong call to this pivotal role.

"The Holy Spirit was really clear," Nickell commented, reflecting on his sense of duty and commitment to lead. He acknowledges the gravity of the role and resolves to uplift the church’s mission.

The Rationale Behind Weece’s Resignation

Weece’s approach to stepping down is shaped by his steadfast commitment to the church’s future rather than personal reasons. He clarified that his departure was not due to fatigue, disenchantment, or any moral failings but is a thought-out decision aimed at ensuring the church’s long-term prosperity.

"I'm stepping aside because I genuinely believe it's what's best for Southland," Weece stated, underlining his decision as proactive and in the church’s best interest. His announcement was met with mixed emotions from the congregation, reflecting gratitude and sadness.

He further encouraged the community to support Scott Nickell during the coming transition, emphasizing Nickell’s wisdom and genuine care for the church’s wellbeing.

Preparing for a Leadership Transition

The transition plan includes Nickell taking on increasing responsibilities as Weece continues his pastoral duties until January 2026. This gradual change is designed to ensure stability and continuity for the congregation.

Weece’s ongoing role until his official resignation will involve leading services and other church activities, maintaining the momentum he has built over two decades.

Weece also expressed a profound sense of gratitude for the opportunity to serve, describing his pastoral tenure as the “absolute privilege of my life.”

The Future of Southland Christian Church

The forthcoming leadership change marks a significant chapter in Southland Christian Church’s history. With Nickell poised to step in, the church is positioned to continue its mission with renewed energy and vision.

The organization aims to sustain its focus on community outreach and spiritual growth, building on the foundations laid by Weece’s dedication and spiritual leadership.

As the transition period unfolds, both Weece and Nickell will focus on preparing the community for the next phase, ensuring a seamless handover and a bright future for Southland Christian Church.
