Christian convert released after Egyptian imprisonment

After enduring a three-year imprisonment in Egypt due to his faith-based Facebook posts, Abdulbaqi Saeed Abdo, a Christian convert, rejoined his family this week.

Abdo’s ordeal, which stemmed from sharing his religious conversion online, continues legally even though he is now free, the Christian Post reported.

In 2021, authorities in Egypt arrested Abdulbaqi Saeed Abdo, following his active participation in a private online group. This group discussed the Christian faith and aspects of Islamic theology, highlighting his departure from Islam which prompted the scrutiny.

His involvement in these discussions led to charges based on laws relating to blasphemy and religious defamation, common in several Middle Eastern countries. Held without a formal criminal trial, Abdo's legal battle has persisted following his release.

Advocacy Group Highlights Severity of the Case

ADF International, a global legal advocacy organization, took up Abdo's case, underlining the urgent need to address human rights violations involved. Kelsey Zorzi, the group’s Director of Advocacy for Religious Freedom, declared this case a "severe violation of human rights."

Throughout his detention period, Abdo was shuttled between various prisons, exacerbating his health conditions. He reported a significant deterioration in his heart, liver, and kidney health due to the challenging prison conditions and lack of appropriate medical care.

Compounding his physical trials, Abdo took up a hunger strike during the last six months of his imprisonment. This action brought attention to the unjust conditions and his plea for a fair handling of his case.

A Global Call for Protecting Free Speech

The arbitrary detention resonated not just with human rights groups but also with renowned advocates for freedom of speech. Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a researcher at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution, criticized the misuse of blasphemy policies that lead to such harsh treatment.

“This is the logical conclusion to a trend that empowers authorities to brutalize innocent people for free expression on social media," Hirsi Ali stated, pointing out the broader implications for free speech worldwide. The conditions faced by Abdo underscored a dystopian use of power-mirroring tactics seen in authoritarian regimes across different continents.

From a personal perspective, the suffering experienced by Abdo touched his family deeply. His son, Husam Baqi, spoke out against the cruelty of punishing individuals for their beliefs and expressions of faith, describing the practice as "hideous."

Abdo Shares His Harrowing Experiences

Upon release, Abdulbaqi Saeed Abdo shared heartfelt words about the trials he faced while separated from his loved ones. “I endured many hardships in prison. It isn’t right that a government should tear me away from my family, keep me in these awful conditions, only because of the faith in which I peacefully choose to believe,” he stated.

His gratitude extended to those who supported him through this ordeal, acknowledging their prayers and efforts towards his release: "I thank everyone who prayed for me while I was in prison, cared about and followed up on my case, and shared the joy of my release from prison."

The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has since been approached by ADF International, advocating for an objective review and condemnation of Abdo's case. They hope this will spur changes in how similar cases are handled globally, and particularly how religious freedom is approached in regions with stringent blasphemy laws.

Concluding Thoughts and the Road Ahead

Despite his release, Abdulbaqi Saeed Abdo’s story remains a poignant reminder of the ongoing challenges facing those who choose to openly discuss and convert their faith in restrictive environments. The international community continues to watch closely, hopeful that Abdo's case may lead to positive reforms in freedom of religion and expression in similar jurisdictions.

Throughout this challenging time, Abdo's resolve and the global advocacy on his behalf underline the significant impact of international pressure on human rights practices, reminding us that vigilance is necessary to protect those who dare to speak their truth amidst adversity.
