Irish boxer John Cooney dies at 28 after brain injury

Irish super-featherweight boxer John Cooney has died following a severe injury sustained during a title defense fight.

According to the Daily Mail, John Cooney passed away a week after undergoing emergency brain surgery resulting from a fight-related injury.

The tragic event unfolded last weekend during Cooney's defense of his Celtic super-featherweight title against opponent Nathan Howells at Ulster Hall. The fight was intense, with Cooney competing fiercely until he was stopped in the ninth round due to visible distress.

A Promising Career Cut Tragically Short

Following the stoppage, Cooney received immediate medical attention ringside before being urgently transported to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of the medical staff, Cooney succumbed to an intracranial hemorrhage a week later, marking a devastating end to a promising career.

John Cooney, known affectionately as "The Kid," had an impressive professional record. Before his untimely death, he secured 11 wins and suffered only one loss, with three of those wins coming by knockout.

After a year-long hiatus due to a hand injury, Cooney made a triumphant return to the ring in October 2023, defeating Tampela Maharusi. This victory set the stage for the fateful title defense that ultimately led to his tragic injury.

Tributes Flow from the Boxing Community

The boxing world has united to honor Cooney's memory. Officials sounded a ten-bell toll at the Co-op Live Arena in Manchester as a traditional tribute to a fallen boxer. Additionally, Matchroom Boxing released a statement expressing deep sadness and extending condolences to Cooney's family, friends, and team.

Nathan Howells, Cooney's last opponent, shared his grief on Instagram, writing, "Just had the news that the worst has happened and unfortunately John has passed away. Thoughts are with his family and friends—sorry for your loss."

Supporters launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist Cooney's family, including his fiancée, Emmaleen, and have raised significant funds. Notably, UFC star Conor McGregor made a considerable contribution, helping the campaign surpass £46,000.

Remembering John "The Kid" Cooney

MHD Promotions, speaking on behalf of Cooney's grieving family, released a heartfelt statement. They emphasized the family's gratitude towards the staff at the Royal Victoria Hospital for their tireless efforts to save John, and they acknowledged the flood of supportive messages and prayers from well-wishers.

The statement read, "It is with complete devastation that we have to announce that after a week of battling for his life, John Cooney has sadly passed away. Mr. and Mrs Cooney and his fiancee Emmaleen would like to thank the staff at Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital who have worked tirelessly to save John's life and for everyone who has sent messages of support and prayers. He was a much-loved son, brother, and partner, and it will take us all a lifetime to forget how special he was. RIP John 'The Kid' Cooney."

This tragic loss has not only impacted his immediate family but has also resonated deeply within the international boxing community, reminding many of the inherent risks associated with contact sports.

An Ongoing Impact on the Boxing World

The loss of John Cooney underlines the critical importance of continual improvements in sports safety protocols, particularly in boxing. His death brings to light the potential dangers of the sport and serves as a poignant reminder of what is at stake for athletes stepping into the ring.

As the community mourns, it also looks to honor Cooney's legacy by advocating for enhanced safety measures in hopes of preventing similar tragedies in the future. The discussions now center around how the sport can evolve to ensure the utmost safety of its competitors, preserving their health while maintaining the spirit of competition.

John Cooney’s legacy, characterized by his prowess in the ring and his determination, will undoubtedly continue to influence the world of boxing for years to come, as the community seeks to reconcile the excitement of the sport with the paramount importance of athlete safety.
