International plea for release of Christian pastor detained in China

Christian Solidarity Worldwide is currently campaigning for the liberation of a Chinese Christian pastor jailed for his religious activities.

Ma Yan, who was apprehended last year and recently tried, faces a nine-month prison sentence for organizing small, private Christian gatherings, the Christian Post reported.

Ma Yan, a 32-year-old native of Yunnan Province, was arrested by police during a raid on August 9, 2024. The raid targeted a humble Christian meeting at a guest house in the Jinfeng District of Yinchuan, where Ma and fewer than ten attendees had gathered.

Following the raid, Ma and three others were taken into custody by the Jinfeng District Public Security Bureau. Authorities charged them the next day, primarily accusing them of "disrupting public order," as referenced in the administrative detention order.

Ma Yan was then held in the Yinchuan Detention Center along with one other Christian for 10 days, while the remaining two were detained for a week. Upon completing this period, Ma's status escalated to criminal detention on August 20, 2024.

Detailed Look at the Legal Battle Facing Pastor Ma

Ma's legal troubles became clearer during his trial on February 10, 2025. The court formally charged him with "organizing illegal gatherings," and he pleaded guilty. However, the court has yet to deliver its final verdict. The prosecution has recommended a sentence of nine months in prison.

Before authorities arrested him, people knew Ma Yan for his work as a house church preacher across the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. His commitment to his faith led him to reach out to fellow practitioners and support other church leaders across provinces.

His detention sparked a significant response from his family and Christian community members. Shortly after authorities arrested him, Ma Yan’s relatives issued a public letter, advocating for the legitimacy of Christian gatherings under the law and questioning the basis of the charges against him.

CSW Challenges Arrest and Legal Proceedings

Statements from Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) underscore the tightrope that religious minorities in China often have to walk. Mervyn Thomas, the president of CSW, remarked on Ma's situation. He called it “yet another instance of the Chinese Communist Party targeting ethnic and religious minorities and violating Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which guarantees the right to freedom of religion or belief.”

Thomas further pleaded for international support: "CSW calls on the authorities to release Ma immediately and to declare him not guilty.” These comments highlight the ongoing struggle for religious freedom in regions with stringent controls over worship and religious gatherings.

Christian communities within China have rallied in support of Ma Yan and his family. Multiple groups have initiated prayer efforts, reflecting collective angst and hope for Ma's safe release.

Exploring the Impact on Ma Yan’s Family and Followers

The repercussions of Ma Yan’s detention resonate deeply with his immediate family and his broader community of followers. His wife, Meihang, supported by the local Christian community, finds herself at the heart of this legal and spiritual battle, striving to muster support amid the ongoing uncertainty.

As the legal procedures slowly unfold, the international eye remains focused on Ma Yan’s case. It underscores the ongoing challenges faced by individuals who practice their religion in areas where such activities are tightly monitored and often restricted by law.

The case of Ma Yan is a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between state policies and individual rights to religious freedom. As this saga continues to unfold, it serves as a significant touchstone for discussions on religious liberty, legal justice, and human rights in the international arena.
