DeSantis promotes wife Casey for Florida governor in 2026

Florida's political landscape shifts dramatically as term-limited Governor Ron DeSantis openly encourages his wife Casey to consider running for the state's top position.

According to AP News, DeSantis praised his wife's conservative credentials while simultaneously criticizing U.S. Representative Byron Donalds, who recently received former President Donald Trump's endorsement for the 2026 Florida gubernatorial race.

The governor's comments in Tampa on Monday highlight growing tensions between DeSantis and Trump's allies. DeSantis touted his wife as someone with "intestinal fortitude" and dedication to conservative principles who could advance his policy accomplishments.

He specifically mentioned that Casey DeSantis could potentially attract even more voters than he did in his 2022 reelection when he won by nearly 20 percentage points.

Brewing political rivalry unfolds

The potential faceoff between candidates backed by DeSantis and Trump creates a fascinating dynamic in Florida politics. DeSantis, who cannot run for a third consecutive term due to term limits, suffered a definitive defeat when challenging Trump for the Republican presidential nomination last year.

Despite working to repair his relationship with Trump following that campaign, DeSantis now appears to be positioning his wife as his preferred successor. This move directly contradicts Trump's endorsement of Congressman Donalds, who has been a loyal Trump surrogate on cable news and during campaign events.

The governor specifically criticized Donalds' contribution to Florida's political landscape, stating: "A guy like Byron, he just hasn't been a part of any of the victories that we've had here over the left over these last years."

Trump made his preference clear last Thursday when he posted on social media his support for Donalds:

Byron Donalds would be a truly Great and Powerful Governor for Florida and, should he decide to run, will have my Complete and Total Endorsement. RUN, BYRON, RUN!

Donalds acknowledged the endorsement on Tuesday through a spokesperson, saying he was "honored to have President Trump's complete and total endorsement." During a recent appearance at the Conservative Political Action Conference, Donalds told the audience to "stay tuned" regarding his future political plans.

Historical allies now at odds

The growing tension between DeSantis and Trump's allies represents a significant shift from their previous collaborative relationship. Former U.S. Representative Matt Gaetz, a strong Trump supporter, expressed disappointment with DeSantis' comments.

Gaetz took to social media platform X to remind DeSantis of their previous teamwork: "Man it hurts me to see this. Governor DeSantis, don't you remember when you, (Donalds) and I were working collaboratively to get you elected in 2018? We literally were your debate prep team."

The fallout highlights the complex dynamics within Florida's Republican Party, where loyalty to Trump often conflicts with state-level political ambitions. This public disagreement emerges against the backdrop of reportedly increasing tensions between DeSantis and Trump-allied legislators in the Florida state government.

First Lady's political ambitions generate buzz

Casey DeSantis' potential gubernatorial run has been the subject of speculation in Florida political circles for some time. As the state's first lady, she has maintained a high profile and active role in her husband's administration.

The governor's public encouragement of his wife's potential candidacy gives credibility to these rumors. Her increased visibility in recent years and active participation in policy initiatives have positioned her as a recognized figure in Florida politics, even without holding elected office.

Political observers note that a Casey DeSantis candidacy would offer continuity with her husband's policies while potentially appealing to different demographic groups. Her background in television broadcasting before becoming first lady could provide advantages in public communication and media engagement critical to modern campaigns.

The race for Florida's governorship is still more than a year away, giving both potential candidates time to build support and formalize their campaigns. The early endorsement from Trump gives Donalds a significant advantage with the Republican base, while Casey DeSantis would benefit from her husband's political infrastructure and donor networks.

Looking toward Florida's political future

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis publicly endorsed his wife Casey as his potential successor while dismissing U.S. Representative Byron Donalds, who recently received former President Donald Trump's backing for the 2026 gubernatorial race. DeSantis praised his wife's conservative credentials and political abilities during comments to reporters in Tampa on Monday.

The developing situation creates an intriguing conflict between DeSantis and Trump, who defeated the governor in last year's Republican presidential primary. With DeSantis term-limited and possibly eyeing another presidential run in 2028, the governor's endorsement of his wife directly challenges Trump's influence over Florida's Republican politics, potentially setting up a proxy battle between these two prominent conservative figures in the 2026 election cycle.
