Gunmen abduct six, injure pastor during church service in Nigeria

An armed assault during a prayer service at Elyon Paradise Ministry Church in Delta State, Nigeria, left six members kidnapped and the pastor gravely wounded.

Last weekend, gunmen stormed the Elyon Paradise Ministry Church, resulting in numerous abductions and severe injuries to the church pastor, the Christian Post reported.

The incident took place at the church in Asagba Ogwashi, where congregation members had gathered for a Saturday evening service. Suddenly, assailants stormed into the building and launched a violent attack.

The attackers began their assault by firing shots inside the church, throwing the congregation into chaos. During the attack, they severely injured Apostle Divine Omodia, the church's pastor, cutting off two of his fingers.

Detailed Account of the Traumatic Event

Church members swiftly transported Pastor Omodia to the hospital after the attack. According to Steve Victor Onuchukwu, a church member, doctors immediately took the pastor into surgery to stabilize his condition.

The gunmen also forcibly took six worshippers from the church. Among those kidnapped were Helen Onwuamaeze, Ariyo Emmanuel, Chike Okolo, Blessing Waye, and two security guards.

Witnesses alerted the police to the violence and abduction. Police Public Relations Officer Bright Edafe confirmed the grim details of the incident.

Reactions and Witness Accounts

Faith Omodia, a witness and spouse of the injured pastor, recounted the harrowing ordeal. "I was lying down with my baby in the church hall...suddenly we heard gunshots. Bullets were shot into the auditorium," she said, describing the moments the gunmen began their assault.

The attackers forced all individuals inside the building to proceed outside, where they were made to lie down. "They then left with some members and ordered the rest of us to go back into the church building," Faith Omodia added, illustrating the kidnappers' ruthless control over the situation.

As of Sunday following the attack, no ransom demand had been made by the abductors, leaving the community anxious and uncertain about the fate of the kidnapped individuals.

Broader Context of Religious Violence

Attackers targeting churchgoers and Christian communities in Nigeria, especially in the northern and middle regions, have made this incident at Elyon Paradise Ministry Church part of a distressing trend. These violent acts often seek to instill fear and disrupt peace within these communities.

The violent attack has left the congregation of Elyon Paradise Ministry and the broader community shaken, prompting calls for increased security measures and more proactive efforts by authorities to protect vulnerable populations.

The kidnappers’ failure to issue a ransom demand has further complicated response efforts, forcing law enforcement and community leaders to strategize the best approach for securing the release of the abducted individuals.

A Community in Distress and Prayer

The local and national communities continue to monitor the situation closely, offering prayers and support for the swift and safe return of the kidnapped individuals and full recovery for Pastor Omodia.

The church community, while grappling with the shock and sorrow of the event, strives to hold onto faith amid adversity, calling on governmental and security forces to intensify their efforts to combat such acts of cruelty and senseless violence.

As the investigation continues, all those affected by this tragedy remain hopeful that resolution and peace may eventually be restored, bringing solace to the afflicted community and deterring future incidents of this nature.
