Legendary actor Gene Hackman found dead along with wife and dog in their New Mexico home

A celebrated career spanning over four decades came to a tragic end when authorities discovered one of Hollywood's most revered actors lifeless in his New Mexico residence.

According to the New York Post, two-time Oscar winner Gene Hackman, 95, was found dead alongside his wife Betsy Arakawa, 65, and their dog in their Santa Fe home on Wednesday afternoon, as confirmed by Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza.

Initial investigations suggested the couple may have been deceased for several days before their discovery. While foul play was not initially suspected, police are now treating the deaths as suspicious after finding open pill bottles scattered throughout the room and an unsecured door.

Hackman's daughter, Elizabeth Jean Hackman, suggested carbon monoxide poisoning as a possible cause, though official determination is pending.

Investigation reveals mysterious circumstances surrounding deaths

Santa Fe County authorities continue to probe the unexpected deaths that have shocked the entertainment industry. The presence of scattered pill bottles and an unlocked door has prompted law enforcement to take a closer look at the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

Police documentation obtained through official channels indicates the investigation remains active and ongoing.

The discovery of multiple open prescription containers throughout the residence has raised questions about the nature of their deaths, despite initial assumptions of natural causes.

The couple's last public appearance occurred at Pappadeaux's Seafood Kitchen in New Mexico on March 28, 2024, nearly a year before their deaths. This final sighting showed no apparent signs of distress or concerning behavior.

Distinguished career marked by memorable performances

Hackman's illustrious acting journey began at the Pasadena Playhouse, where he formed lasting friendships with fellow aspiring actors Dustin Hoffman and Robert Duvall.

Speaking about those early days, Hackman once reflected to Vanity Fair:

There was a kind of feeling of Jack Kerouac at that time — 'On the Road' — kids just wanting to have a good time and kind of experience things. It didn't have anything to do with being successful — just wanting to try this thing and see if it worked.

His breakthrough came in 1964 with a Broadway role in "Any Wednesday," followed by his Oscar-nominated performance in "Bonnie and Clyde" (1967). The actor's career reached new heights with his Oscar-winning role in "The French Connection" (1971), featuring one of cinema's most iconic car chase sequences.

Throughout his career, Hackman demonstrated remarkable versatility across genres. From his portrayal of a basketball coach in "Hoosiers" to his Oscar-winning performance in "Unforgiven," he consistently delivered powerful performances that resonated with audiences and critics alike.

Life after retirement focused on creative pursuits

Following his retirement from acting in 2004, Hackman pursued various creative endeavors in New Mexico.

Health concerns, particularly related to his heart condition, influenced his decision to step away from the demanding world of filmmaking.

The actor found solace in writing, collaborating with underwater researcher Daniel Lenihan on several adventure novels. He approached this new chapter with humility and enthusiasm, viewing writing as a more manageable form of creative expression.

Hackman's transition from acting to writing exemplified his artistic versatility. His novels, including "Justice For None" and "Wake of the Perdido Star," showcased his storytelling abilities beyond the silver screen.

Final chapter of a remarkable journey

Gene Hackman's passing marks the end of an era in Hollywood history. The acclaimed actor leaves behind three children - Christopher, Elizabeth Jean, and Leslie Anne - from his previous marriage to Faye Maltese, who passed away in 2017.

The circumstances surrounding the deaths of Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, remain under investigation by Santa Fe County authorities. As the entertainment world mourns the loss of one of its most talented performers, the investigation continues to piece together the final moments of this legendary actor and his beloved wife.
