12-year-old Christian girl rescued in Pakistan

Lahore, Pakistan — In a poignant culmination to a harrowing episode, police freed 12-year-old Saba Shafique after kidnappers abducted her and forced her into marriage.

In a collaborative rescue operation between Punjab and Sindh police, Saba Shafique was saved from her abductor who coerced her into a forced conversion and sham marriage, the Christian Post reported.

Saba Shafique, a Christian resident of Walton Model Colony No. 2 in Lahore Cantonment, was abducted from outside her home on January 5 by Muhammad Ali, a 35-year-old Muslim neighbor. This unsettling incident shocked the local community, illustrating a stark violation of child rights and communal harmony.

The abduction led Saba to Sialkot City, where Ali manipulated the situation to falsely declare her as 18 and orchestrated a sham religious conversion and marriage on January 8. The pretense of this marriage highlighted the ruthless exploitation and distortion of religious and civic norms.

Subsequently, Ali moved Saba to Shaheed Benazirabad city in Sindh Province, further complicating the rescue efforts due to the geographical and jurisdictional shift.

The Unwavering Efforts of Law Enforcement

Lahore police, emboldened by crucial intelligence and collaboration with Sindh police, traced Saba to an outhouse in a village in Shaheed Benazirabad. The raid conducted on March 5 resulted in Saba's liberation and Ali's arrest, a testament to the perseverance and coordination among law enforcement agencies.

After rescuing her, authorities safely returned Saba to Lahore on March 6, where she tearfully reunited with her family. Her return not only ended a distressing saga but also restored a sense of justice and relief to her loved ones and community.

HARDS Pakistan, a Christian paralegal organization, also played a pivotal role in supporting the successful rescue by facilitating the inter-provincial collaboration needed for this complex operation.

Victim's Heart-Wrenching Ordeal and Community Reaction

During her captivity, Saba endured severe psychological and physical abuse. "He did bad things with me which numbed my mind and body," Saba recounted, laying bare the gravity of her ordeal. She also revealed that Ali compelled her to declare, under duress, that she had willingly converted and married him.

Reflecting on the impact of Ali's deception, Saba’s mother, Rakhil Shafique, expressed profound relief and unexpected shock at the neighbor's actions, “His behavior with our children was such that we never suspected what was going on in his mind.”

The community’s response was a blend of shock and support, rallying around the family and calling for stricter measures to prevent similar incidents. Christian rights activists played a crucial role, emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance and legal reforms to protect minor girls, particularly from religious minority communities.

Legal Proceedings and Calls for Justice

Muhammad Ali's admission of guilt during police interrogation has led to several charges, including rape and child marriage. This admittance is a crucial step in the legal battle that lies ahead, aiming to set a precedent for stringent action against such grievous abuses.

Napolean Qayyum, a local leader, stressed the significance of Ali facing the full consequences of his actions, underscoring a broader call for judicial rigor and consistency in handling cases of abduction and forced conversion.

Moreover, Sohail Habil from HARDS Pakistan highlighted the role of political leadership in Sindh, particularly thanking the Pakistan People’s Party for their proactive approach in facilitating the rescue operation.

Broadening the Dialogue on Child Safety and Rights

This incident has ignited a broader discussion on child safety and the manipulation of religious differences to perpetrate crimes. “It is important to teach children how predators like Ali employ various tactics to lure victims from their homes,” advised Napolean Qayyum, pointing to a need for comprehensive community-based education on safety and vigilance.

The case has also raised questions about the effectiveness of existing laws protecting minors and the urgent need for reforms to address loopholes that allow such abuses to continue.

As Saba tries to reclaim a sense of normalcy, her story highlights the ongoing challenges and the crucial need for proactive and protective measures for vulnerable populations, ensuring that no child suffers as she did.
