Bill Maher reveals details of dinner meeting with Trump

In an unexpected twist, comedian Bill Maher shared insights from a recent private dinner with President Donald Trump, portraying a side of him rarely seen by the public.

During the encounter, Maher -- a longtime critic of the president -- said he was notably impressed by Trump's jovial and relaxed demeanor, which starkly contrasted with his well-known public persona, as the New York Post reports.

The dinner, held at the White House on March 31, included notable figures such as musician Kid Rock and UFC president Dana White. Maher, known for his sharp wit and often critical perspective of Trump, discussed this unique experience on an episode of his HBO show, Real Time with Bill Maher, aired on April 11, 2025.

During the meal, Maher presented Trump with a printed list of past insults the president had hurled at him over the years. Instead of reacting with hostility, Trump signed the list humorously. This gesture was one of many surprising moments that evening that displayed a different side of Trump.

Approachable Trump observed

Throughout the dinner, Maher found that he could converse with Trump in ways he felt unable to with other politicians he supported in the past.

Maher admitted he voted for Clinton and Obama but never felt as comfortable speaking openly with them as he did with Trump that evening.

Discussing various topics, they touched on significant issues such as the Iran nuclear deal. Maher criticized Trump's decision to dismantle the agreement initiated by Obama, expecting a defensive reaction. Instead, Trump received the criticism well, showcasing an openness to differing viewpoints.

The dinner also led to a remarkable admission from Trump, who acknowledged he had "lost" the 2020 presidential election -- a statement he had notoriously disputed publicly.

This revelation was part of the candid and self-aware demeanor Trump exhibited throughout the evening.

Maher praises Trump's demeanor

According to Maher, one of the most compelling aspects of their discussion was Trump's ability to laugh, including at himself -- an element Maher had never observed in Trump's public appearances. The comedian noted, "Just for starters, he laughs. I’d never seen him laugh in public. But he does -- including at himself -- and it’s not fake."

Maher's reflections painted a picture of a president who could engage in self-deprecation and humor, which starkly contrasted with the often-confrontational figure seen in public.

This behind-the-scenes glimpse into Trump's personality continued to astonish Maher, particularly as he witnessed Trump revert to his more familiar public demeanor in a news conference following their meeting.

The duality of Trump's character intrigued Maher, who jokingly queried, "Who’s that guy? And why can’t we get the guy I met to be the public guy?" His experience highlighted an intriguing aspect of political personas — the contrast between private realities and public performances.

Reflections on unique encounter

Maher's storytelling on his show did not shy away from acknowledging the potential disbelief and shock his account might trigger among many of his viewers. “And I know, as I say that, millions of liberal sphincters just tightened,” he remarked humorously following his positive comments about Trump.

The comedian also remarked on the surreal nature of the overall experience -- he had entered the White House with preconceptions and walked out with a perception altered by the genuine interactions he had with the president.

Such candid exchanges are rare in the highly staged arena of national politics, making Maher's insights particularly noteworthy.

In reflection, Maher summed up his experience by distinguishing between Trump's presidential demeanor and his theatrical public appearances.

“A crazy person does not live in the White House. A person who plays a crazy person on TV a lot lives there. Which I know is f–ed up, it’s just not as f–ed up as I thought it was,” he concluded.
