US missionary survives kidnap ordeal in South Africa shootout

Josh Sullivan, a 34-year-old missionary from Tennessee, found himself in a dire situation when he was abducted during a church sermon in Motherwell, South Africa.

Following a tense standoff on April 15, 2025, South African police rescued Sullivan unharmed from kidnappers, who had held him captive for five days, the Christian Post reported.

The incident began on April 10, when armed individuals stormed Sullivan’s church and took him hostage. The kidnappers later demanded a ransom, though the specifics of their demands remain undisclosed.

Sullivan was held in a safe house located in KwaMagxaki, a suburb of Gqeberha. This area would later become the scene of a dramatic shootout involving the South African Police Service.

Shootout Leads to Dramatic Rescue Operation

Law enforcement tracked Sullivan to the safe house. As police approached, they noticed a vehicle with several individuals inside.

A South African Police Service spokesperson related that the suspects tried to escape upon noticing the officers. This triggered a shootout when the suspects opened fire on the police.

The confrontation ended with three suspects dead. Sullivan was found inside the same vehicle from which the gunmen had attacked. Remarkably, he was not hurt in the ordeal.

Community Rejoices as Missionary Returns Unharmed

After the rescue, Sullivan was immediately examined by medical professionals, who declared him to be in excellent health despite his harrowing experience.

Pastor Tom Hatley from Fellowship Baptist Church in Maryville, Tennessee, announced the good news of Sullivan’s release. He expressed immense gratitude for the community’s prayers and support during the ordeal.

Church secretary, Heather Shirley, spoke on the divine protection she believed was with Sullivan throughout the ordeal, attributing his safety to a "hedge of protection provided by God." She eagerly anticipates Sullivan sharing his firsthand account.

Ongoing Investigation and Call for Privacy

The South African Police Service continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the kidnapping and the violent shootout that ensued.

Authorities have advised the public to respect the privacy of Sullivan and his family as they recover from the event. Meanwhile, Shirley emphasized the importance of allowing Sullivan to communicate his experience in his own words to his church community.

While the community has been buoyed by Sullivan’s safe return, the incident has raised concerns regarding the safety of foreign missionaries in volatile regions. The police pledge to deepen their investigations to uncover the motivations behind the kidnapping and to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Reflections on the Role of Faith in Adversity

The tight-knit community at Fellowship Baptist Church continues to reflect on the events, finding strength in their faith, which they believe played a crucial role in Sullivan’s survival and rescue.

The church has organized gatherings to give thanks and to support Sullivan’s reintegration after his traumatic experience. Shirley reiterated the profound impact of collective prayer and faith in guiding them through the crisis.

The story of Josh Sullivan’s abduction and rescue not only underscores the risks faced by missionaries worldwide but also highlights the resilience of the human spirit and community in the face of adversity.
