Soccer star Joe Thompson dies at 36 after cancer battle

The world of soccer and sports punditry is mourning the loss of Joe Thompson, a former midfielder for Rochdale who has died at the age of 36.

On Thursday, April 17, Thompson passed away surrounded by his family, closing a chapter marked by three separate cancer diagnose, ongoing, resilience, and enduring inspiration, as People reports.

Thompson first faced cancer at the young age of 23, diagnosed with Nodular Sclerosis Hodgkin Lymphoma.

His journey through chemotherapy led him into remission, marking the first of several battles he would have with the disease.

Return to pitch marred by cancer's return

His health allowed a return to soccer, only to face cancer once again three years later. The second diagnosis called for a stem cell treatment, yet Thompson showed unparalleled strength, returning to professional soccer in the wake of his recovery.

Thompson’s career spanned several clubs. He made over 200 appearances for Rochdale and had stints at Manchester United’s Academy, Tranmere Rovers, Carlisle United, Southport, and Bury. His on-field prowess was deeply admired and left a lasting impact on each of these clubs.

Eventually, in 2019, Thompson retired from professional soccer. His later years were not without difficulties, as in April 2024, he faced a grim prognosis with a stage four lymphoma diagnosis.

Post-soccer career inspires

After his retirement, Thompson did not step away from the limelight but instead transitioned to roles that embraced his articulate and inspiring personality.

He became a well-respected sports pundit and a motivational speaker, bringing his stories of resilience and determination to audiences beyond the soccer pitch.

Thompson also took on an ambassadorial role with Manchester United, contributing to the sports community that had been a significant part of his life.

This role allowed him to influence young athletes and remain involved with soccer, albeit from a different perspective.

Throughout his ordeal, Thompson’s courage and fighting spirit were evident, touching everyone from teammates to fans and anyone who heard his story.

Family left to mourn

His wife, Chantelle Thompson, announced his passing in a moving Instagram post, highlighting his final moments at home, where he desired to be. She described it as a peaceful departure, surrounded by family.

“Our brave Joey passed away in the early hours of Thursday morning. He was at home where he wanted to be in a beautiful, peaceful setting surrounded by his family when he transitioned,” Chantelle shared on social media.

She continued to reflect on his life, noting, “Joe has made such an impact on so many people, and we are all forever grateful for him blessing us with his presence and for being so strong and staying with us as long as he did against all the odds. He was the most incredible husband, son, brother, friend & father to our beautiful daughters who will now carry his light and legacy on.”

Public reactions pour in

Rochdale AFC, where Thompson spent much of his career, referred to him affectionately as "Joey T." The club stated, “He faced every battle head-on, both on and off the pitch. His journey and indomitable spirit have been an inspiration for everyone who has been touched by his story.”

Manchester United’s Academy also paid tribute, “Everyone who knew Joe thought he was a great man, whose personality lit up every room he entered, despite the pain he had endured in his life. We’ll always remember him and send our deepest condolences to his wife, Chantelle, and two daughters.”

As the soccer community and his family deal with this profound loss, the legacy of Joe Thompson as a fighter, a talented athlete, and a loving family man continues to resonate. His life, marked by difficult battles and significant triumphs, stands as a beacon of resilience and hope for many.
