Plateau State's Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has called on local traditional leaders to form vigilante groups amid increasing jihadist attacks targeting Christian communities.

According to Breitbart, Governor Mutfwang's plan aims to curb ethnic Fulani terrorist activities causing death and displacement across Nigeria's Middle Belt.

In an area bridging the largely Christian south and the Muslim-dominated north, Plateau State faces significant threats from ethnic Fulani jihadists. These extremists have recently intensified their violent campaigns, leading to a disturbing escalation in both the scope of their attacks and the resultant human cost.

Recent heartrending episodes include the tragic events of April 7, where a community suffered the loss of nine lives, and an even more significant onslaught on April 2, which claimed over 60 victims. A Palm Sunday attack on April 13 in the villages of Zikke and Kimakpa resulted in a devastating toll of at least 51 lives.

Such unrelenting attacks have spurred the governor to mandate urgent measures which include restricting nighttime grazing and the transport of cattle, alongside a prohibition on motorcycles after 7 p.m., to mitigate the risk of nocturnal attacks.

Visiting Bassa, one of the locales severely affected by these attacks, Governor Mutfwang expressed his profound distress and apology to the affected communities. His message was clear—he had believed that prior security arrangements would prevent further violence. His emotion underscored the severity and personal impact of the crisis.

The focus then shifted to the roles of local chieftains and youth leaders, whom the governor tasked with reviving and spearheading local vigilante groups in collaboration with state security forces. "I call on traditional rulers and youth leaders to revive local vigilante patrols in partnership with security forces. We must be united in protecting our land, guided by justice and law," stated Governor Mutfwang, underscoring the urgent need for community-led defensive strategies.

Despite the reassurance from the highest level of government, both local and national leaders face increasing pressure to effectively and promptly address the complex security issues that Nigeria continues to battle, affecting people across religious and ethnic lines. "This insecurity, everyone is affected, Christians, Muslims alike. I have no religious bias; I won’t be a bigot," affirmed President Tinubu.

Governor Mutfwang's directive is a direct response to the Christian persecution aid group Open Doors, which reported significant displacements and violence against Christian congregations. Over 3,000 individuals have been displaced following a series of brutal onslaughts since late March.

A Coalition of Northern Groups described the scale and persistence of the violence as a "grotesque failure of governance," demanding more than usual condemnation and promises of improvements. "The recent massacre in Plateau State, where over 100 lives were brutally cut short, communities were razed, and families were displaced, represents a grotesque failure of governance. These killings are not isolated," they remarked, highlighting the urgency for effective governmental action.
