‘Duck Dynasty’ figure Phil Robertson dies at 79 after long health battle

Phil Robertson, the outspoken patriarch of the hit reality series “Duck Dynasty” and founder of the Duck Commander company, has died at age 79 after a prolonged period of declining health.

According to the Daily Caller, Robertson’s family announced his passing on Sunday, sharing that the beloved television personality had endured numerous medical issues in recent years, including Alzheimer’s disease.

Robertson gained national fame as part of “Duck Dynasty,” an A&E reality series spotlighting his Louisiana family and their duck-call business. The show debuted in 2012 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon, lasting until 2017.

Before television stardom, Robertson founded Duck Commander in 1972, turning his lifelong passion for hunting into a multimillion-dollar business. His rugged persona and unapologetic Christian beliefs made him a lasting figure in American pop culture.

Long before he became a household name, Robertson played college football at Louisiana Tech. Notably, he was the starting quarterback ahead of future NFL Hall of Famer Terry Bradshaw before choosing to leave the sport to pursue hunting and the outdoors.

Years of Health Struggles Take Toll

Health concerns had increasingly shadowed his final years. Robertson’s family first acknowledged his declining condition publicly during an episode of their podcast, “Unashamed with the Robertson Family,” in December. That’s when it was revealed he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

His son Willie Robertson later spoke with Fox News Digital, detailing the scope of his father’s ailments. “He’s got a blood disorder, and then he’s got the mental issues that could be early [onset] Alzheimer’s … and probably some mini-strokes because of his blood,” he said at the time.

Willie also mentioned that Robertson was dealing with several painful injuries, including a fractured back, which further contributed to his overall health decline. “He’s kind of battling many different things at the same time,” he said.

Family’s Open Reflections as Health Worsened

Son Jase Robertson offered candid updates in recent months, especially about his father’s deteriorating condition. “The No. 1 question I get everywhere I go [is], ‘How’s your dad doing?’ Now, I’m just giving the blunt truth. I say, ‘Not good,’” he shared in a recent statement.

Jase also emphasized the family’s efforts to care for their patriarch. “We’re making him comfortable, and we’re doing the best we can. I think that’s just what you do,” he said, reflecting the family’s commitment to supporting Robertson through his final chapter.

News of Robertson’s passing came late Sunday in a heartfelt message from his daughter-in-law, Korie Robertson, posted on Instagram. “We celebrate today that our father, husband, and grandfather, Phil Robertson, is now with the Lord,” she wrote.

Private Farewell and Tribute to Faith

Korie shared the deep faith that defined Robertson’s life and family. “He reminded us often of the words of Paul, ‘you do not grieve like those who have no hope,’” she wrote. Her message conveyed comfort in the belief that he is at peace.

She continued, “Thank you for the love and prayers of so many whose lives have been impacted by his life saved by grace, his bold faith, and by his desire to tell everyone who would listen the Good News of Jesus.”

“We are grateful for his life on earth and will continue the legacy of love for God and love for others until we see him again,” Korie concluded. Her words underscored the spiritual legacy Robertson valued even more than television fame.

Legacy Beyond the Screen

The Robertson family has indicated that a private funeral service will be held. They also plan to announce details about a future public celebration honoring his life and influence.

Though best recognized for reality television, Robertson’s life reflected a broader cultural and spiritual journey. His priorities remained rooted in faith, family, and the outdoors, values that helped shape the identity of millions of “Duck Dynasty” viewers.

Phil Robertson’s enduring impact, both in entertainment and personal testimony, will be remembered by those who admired his authenticity and commitment to what he believed mattered most.
