Elon Musk slams Trump tax bill, angers GOP lawmakers

Elon Musk just tossed a grenade into the Republican celebration over their latest legislative win, and some GOP lawmakers are not amused. The tech titan and temporary government advisor has openly bashed a sweeping bill passed by House Republicans, calling it a budget-busting disaster. Talk about a party crasher.

According to Fox News, House Republicans pushed through what they’ve dubbed the "big, beautiful bill" last week, a comprehensive piece of legislation that advances President Donald Trump’s priorities on taxes, immigration, defense, and energy.

This bill, passed via the budget reconciliation process to bypass the Senate’s usual 60-vote hurdle, has ignited a firestorm of debate within conservative circles. Musk labeled it a "massive spending bill" that balloons the federal deficit, directly challenging the fiscal restraint many on the right claim to champion. It’s a rare moment when a Trump ally turns critic, and the timing couldn’t be sharper.

Musk’s Critique Sparks GOP Frustration

Adding fuel to the fire, Musk argued that the bill undermines efforts by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a group he’s been tied to during his stint as a Special Government Employee. He’s clearly not buying the GOP’s victory lap on this one. Perhaps someone should’ve reminded him that not every policy fits neatly into a Tesla blueprint.

Republican defenders, however, are quick to push back, insisting the reconciliation process can’t accommodate the discretionary spending cuts Musk and DOGE advocate. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., has promised to tackle those cuts in a separate legislative package, signaling that Musk’s concerns aren’t being entirely ignored. Still, it’s a polite way of saying, “Thanks, but no thanks.”

Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, R-N.Y., took a firmer stance, noting, “The biggest winners... are middle-class families.” She emphasized the bill’s focus on tax relief and fraud reduction without slashing programs that everyday Americans rely on. If that’s not a subtle jab at billionaire Musk’s priorities, what is?

Discretionary Cuts Face Legislative Hurdles

Not everyone in the GOP is singing the same tune, though, as internal divisions surface. House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Harris, R-Md., admitted sharing Musk’s worries about the bill’s “short-term adverse effect” on the deficit, even voting “present” during the reconciliation tally. That’s a quiet rebellion worth noting.

Rep. Warren Davidson, R-Ohio, went further, casting the lone Republican “no” vote and slamming the rushed process. “Don’t hope someone... cuts spending someday,” he posted on X, urging immediate action over future promises. Turns out, fiscal hawks still have talons.

An anonymous House Republican wasn’t so kind, grumbling that Musk “didn’t have... the process” down, arguing DOGE cuts belong in the budget, not reconciliation. It’s a not-so-subtle reminder that governing isn’t a tech startup—you can’t just debug the system overnight.

White House and Senate Next Steps

Meanwhile, the White House is gearing up to send Congress a package of proposed spending reductions next week, incorporating DOGE-outlined cuts to discretionary funding. Trump advisor Stephen Miller clarified that under Senate rules, such cuts can’t be shoved into a reconciliation bill like this one. It’s a procedural maze, but at least there’s a map coming.

Miller also hailed the bill as containing “the single largest... welfare reform” in U.S. history, a point meant to reassure fiscal conservatives. Yet, with debt markets jittery over national deficits, as Harris noted, the applause might be premature. Winning hearts and minds takes more than bold claims.

Back to Musk, his critique hasn’t gone unanswered by unnamed GOP voices, with one lawmaker telling Fox News Digital, “This is why... no place in Congress.” It’s a harsh dismissal of Musk’s input, suggesting he’s overstepped his advisory role. Actions, as they say, carry consequences.

Musk Steps Back Amid Controversy

In a twist, Musk announced late Wednesday that he’s stepping away from his federal role as his time as a Special Government Employee winds down. Whether this exit is tied to the bill backlash or just a coincidence remains unclear, as Tesla didn’t respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment. Either way, his departure adds another layer to this unfolding drama.

Some Republicans, while acknowledging Musk’s DOGE contributions, seem relieved to see less interference from a non-legislator. The conservative base cherishes Trump’s agenda, but it’s evident not everyone welcomes outside voices meddling in the messy world of Capitol Hill deal-making. Maybe Musk’s next innovation should be a political mute button.

As the Senate prepares to weigh in, all eyes are on whether they’ll address the deficit concerns Musk, Harris, and Davidson have raised. House Republicans have laid their cards on the table with a bill prioritizing middle-class relief over immediate cuts, but the debate over fiscal responsibility rages on. For now, the GOP’s “big, beautiful” victory comes with a side of very public growing pains.
