Khabib Nurmagomedov criticized for declining handshake with broadcaster

Former UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov drew attention during a high-profile UEFA Champions League broadcast when he appeared to avoid shaking hands with sports commentator Kate Scott.

According to Breitbart News, the moment has sparked online discussions due to Nurmagomedov’s observance of religious customs that discourage physical contact with women who are not family members.

The incident happened during televised coverage of the UEFA Champions League. Nurmagomedov, who retired from mixed martial arts in 2020, participated in a panel alongside streamer IShowSpeed and former footballers Jamie Carragher, Micah Richards, and Thierry Henry.

Panel appearance takes a controversial turn

As the broadcast segment progressed, Nurmagomedov was seen greeting the male presenters with a handshake. All interactions appeared smooth until the moment Kate Scott extended her hand to greet the former fighter.

The retired UFC star, without returning the gesture, placed his right hand over his chest and refrained from making physical contact with Scott. The response happened in full view of the cameras and has since garnered widespread reactions on social media platforms.

Scott handled the moment with professionalism, saying, “I apologize, thank you so much,” as she responded to the gesture by also placing her hand on her chest.

Religious traditions behind the gesture

Nurmagomedov, known for his strong adherence to Islamic principles, follows teachings that guide Muslim men to avoid unnecessary contact with women who are not closely related. This includes refraining from handshakes in professional or social settings.

He has spoken publicly in the past about his commitment to his faith, which often influences how he engages in public life and media appearances. This latest incident reflects that ongoing commitment, even under high-profile circumstances.

The New York Post reported on the on-air incident, adding visibility to an already widely circulated clip. Debates have since arisen on whether religious practice should be accommodated during international broadcasts with diverse presenters.

Social media weighs in on the moment

Viewers online offered mixed reactions. Some defended Nurmagomedov’s actions as a matter of personal and religious integrity, while others criticized the perceived slight and questioned its place in a professional media setting.

The discussion has extended beyond sports circles, touching on broader topics such as multicultural respect, religious expression in public spaces, and gender dynamics in the workplace. Comment sections and forums reflected the wide range of perspectives being voiced.

This is not the first time cultural practices have caused misunderstandings in professional contexts. However, the prominence of Nurmagomedov, a widely respected figure in the sports world, made this particular moment stand out.

Nurmagomedov’s rise to global stardom

Before retiring from the UFC, Nurmagomedov made history as the first Muslim fighter to hold a UFC championship title. His undefeated record and dominant performances made him one of the most recognized fighters in mixed martial arts history.

His final match took place in 2020 when he defeated Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 by submission. He retired afterward, fulfilling a promise made to his family following the death of his father and coach.

Following his departure from competition, Nurmagomedov has remained active in the global sports scene, teaming up with athletes, commentators, and digital personalities for various appearances.
