Lakewood Church co-founder Dodie Osteen dies at 91

Dodie Osteen, a pioneering figure in American ministry and the mother of Pastor Joel Osteen, has passed away at 91.

Her death was announced Wednesday night by her son, Joel Osteen, who described her as a devoted servant of God and a source of inspiration to countless people around the world, KHOU 11 reported.

Dodie Osteen died peacefully at her home of natural causes, according to her family. Her passing marks the end of a long life committed to faith, family, and community service.

She co-founded Lakewood Church with her husband, John Osteen, in 1959. The first service took place on Mother's Day that year on the outskirts of Houston, launching what would become one of the nation's largest churches.

John Osteen led the church for four decades until he died in 1999 at the age of 77. His leadership helped shape Lakewood's identity as a dynamic, inclusive Christian congregation.

Lakewood Church’s Early Beginnings And Growth

Following John Osteen’s passing, the leadership of Lakewood Church transitioned to their son, Joel Osteen. Under his guidance, the church moved to a much larger facility—formerly the Houston Summit and later the Compaq Center—located along the Southwest Freeway.

Today, Lakewood Church serves as a global ministry, broadcasting its weekly services to millions of viewers. Its reach expanded significantly under Joel’s leadership, but its foundation lies in the groundwork laid by Dodie and John Osteen.

Throughout the years, Dodie remained a central figure in the church community. Affectionately known as “Mama Dodie” at Lakewood, she was often seen offering personal encouragement and prayer to congregants.

A Personal Battle That Inspired Many

In 1986, Dodie Osteen published her book “Healed of Cancer,” which detailed her personal experience with metastatic liver cancer. Her recovery and spiritual resilience became a beacon of hope for many facing similar challenges.

The book has since reached readers across the globe and continues to be referenced by those drawing strength from her testimony. Her story of healing contributed to her status as a highly respected and admired figure within and beyond the church community.

Dodie’s ministry extended well beyond the pulpit, as she was active in hospital visitations, support groups, and prayer gatherings for decades. Her faith-driven mission was rooted in compassion and uplifted countless lives.

Family’s Tribute And Community Impact

Joel Osteen shared the news via social media, expressing the deep sense of loss felt by both their family and the entire Lakewood congregation. In his words, his mother served faithfully and touched the lives of millions through her messages of hope and perseverance.

“It is with a heavy heart that Victoria and I, along with our family, announce the passing of our cherished mother and grandmother,” he wrote. He called her the “beloved matriarch of Lakewood Church” and recognized the powerful imprint she left on the church’s legacy.

He noted that Dodie passed away peacefully, a testament to the calm spiritual presence she carried throughout her life. Her consistent message of faith across decades was central to Lakewood’s core mission.

Legacy Of Generational Ministry

The Osteen family has now overseen Lakewood Church through multiple generations of leadership. Dodie’s contributions as a co-founder will remain foundational to the institution’s history and growth.

Her life will be remembered for dedication to spiritual outreach, personal resilience in the face of illness, and her lifelong commitment to serving others. She leaves behind a legacy marked by empathy and unwavering faith.

Funeral plans for Dodie Osteen are still pending, and Lakewood Church is expected to release more information in the coming days. Tributes continue to pour in from congregants and religious leaders across the country.
