Trump urges Cracker Barrel to reverse logo change amid backlash

President Donald Trump weighed in on Cracker Barrel’s controversial rebranding on Tuesday, telling the country-style dining chain to restore its traditional logo after public backlash over recent changes.

According to Red State, the upheaval followed Cracker Barrel’s decision to drop long-standing imagery from its brand, prompting responses from Trump, his son Donald Trump Jr., and rival company Steak N’ Shake—all criticizing the move as a misguided attempt to appear modern.

Cracker Barrel debuted its new minimalist logo a week ago, removing its recognizable image of a man sitting beside a wooden barrel. The design shift, intended to modernize the brand’s look, created an immediate stir on social media. Detractors labeled the move “woke” and expressed concern over the company distancing itself from its rustic roots.

Customers React as Iconic Symbol Is Retired

Don Jr. joined the criticism, claiming the company had turned its back on its heritage. Meanwhile, competitors like Steak N’ Shake also weighed in, characterizing the logo change as a shallow attempt to win approval from trend-focused audiences.

“A cheap effort to gain the approval of trend seekers,” Steak N’ Shake said in a public comment, pointing to what they see as Cracker Barrel’s deviation from its longtime image. The sentiment was echoed online, where many longtime customers voiced disappointment over the logo’s removal.

President Trump addressed the issue on Tuesday morning, using his platform to advise the restaurant on how to recover. He urged Cracker Barrel to reintroduce the classic logo, institute better management practices, and take advantage of what he described as substantial free media attention.

Trump Sees Opportunity in Public Controversy

“Cracker Barrel should go back to the old logo, admit a mistake based on customer response (the ultimate Poll), and manage the company better than ever before,” Trump said in his statement. He went on to call the situation an opportunity for a major turnaround.

“They got a Billion Dollars' worth of free publicity if they play their cards right,” he continued. “Very tricky to do, but a great opportunity. Have a major News Conference today. Make Cracker Barrel a WINNER again."

Drawing a parallel between the company’s situation and his own tenure in office, Trump said, “Remember, in just a short period of time, I made the United States of America the ‘HOTTEST’ Country anywhere in the World. One year ago, it was ‘DEAD.’” Ending his remarks, Trump added simply, “Good luck!”

Cracker Barrel Responds Amid Growing Scrutiny

Following mounting criticism, Cracker Barrel attempted to clarify its intentions and reassure concerned customers. CEO Julie Masino initially described public reaction as “overwhelmingly positive,” even as social media opinions remained divided.

However, in a follow-up statement days later, the company acknowledged the missteps. “We could've done a better job,” Cracker Barrel admitted, suggesting they had perhaps not communicated the purpose or limits of the rebranding clearly.

The company assured its patrons that, despite the logo update, fundamental features of the Cracker Barrel experience would not be altered. From front-porch rocking chairs and old-fashioned fireplaces to pegboard games and vintage decor, the brand emphasized that its core experience remains intact.

Cracker Barrel Says Its Identity Remains Intact

In particular, Cracker Barrel paid attention to concerns surrounding references to “Uncle Herschel,” a familiar name and menu staple within the brand. Despite rebranding concerns, the company confirmed Uncle Herschel’s presence would continue.

“Uncle Herschel will still be on our menu (welcome back Uncle Herschel’s Favorite Breakfast Platter), on our road signs, and featured in our country store. He’s not going anywhere – he’s family,” the statement read.

The logo change, intended as a subtle design update, instead prompted a broader discussion about branding, tradition, and how companies adapt to a changing cultural and political landscape. Trump’s comments added further attention to a situation that was already gaining widespread notice.

Looking Ahead to Public and Brand Recovery

For now, it's unclear whether Cracker Barrel will take Trump’s suggestions into account or stage a public reversal of its updated branding. No follow-up press conference has yet been announced, and the new logo remains in place as of midweek.

The episode highlights the risks high-profile brands face when navigating between modernizing their image and holding on to their historical identity. In Cracker Barrel’s case, the reaction has become a national conversation involving political figures, competitors, and loyal customers.

What started as a design tweak quickly turned into a broader issue of corporate identity and customer loyalty. How Cracker Barrel moves forward could set an example for similar businesses, balancing change and tradition.
