Trump takes aim at Texas Democrat Talarico, claims he 'allowed' him to beat Crockett in Senate primary

President Donald Trump turned his sights on Texas Democrat James Talarico on Sunday, posting on Truth Social that he "allowed" the state lawmaker to defeat Rep. Jasmine Crockett in the state's Senate Democratic primary. The post marked the first time Trump has targeted Talarico directly on the platform.

Trump labeled Talarico a "weak, ineffective guy who we 'allowed' to win," mocking him over his promotion of "six Genders" and calling him "a FRAUD." He didn't stop there.

The president unloaded one of his characteristically sprawling broadsides, looping in California Gov. Gavin Newsom for good measure:

"I believe that any human being running against him, sick, incompetent, close to death or, even a child, would win. He may be the Worst Candidate I have ever seen, other than, of course, Gavin Newscum who admitted that he suffers from mental incapacity, is unable to read a speech, and is dumb but, in saying 'the dumb comment,' referred to his audience, and therefore became, in the eyes of African Americans, A TOTAL RACIST — which is probably true!"

The post landed just hours after Trump wrote separately that Democrats are the "greatest enemy" of America, the Washington Examiner reported.

Talarico's record writes the attack ads themselves

Talarico has gained national attention for his outspoken criticism of Republican policies and his focus on education and cultural issues. But it's the cultural posturing that makes him such a ripe target heading into a general election in deep-red Texas.

The Democratic lawmaker promoted scaling back on meat consumption and said his campaign went vegan to fight climate change. In Texas. The state where cattle outnumber political consultants, though sometimes it's hard to tell the difference. His campaign team later posted a photo of him eating cooked meat, apparently recognizing that running as the vegan candidate in a state built on barbecue carries certain electoral liabilities.

That damage-control photo tells you everything you need to know about where Talarico's instincts actually are versus where he thinks Texas voters live. He adopted the position to signal virtue to a progressive base, then scrambled to undo it when the general electorate came into focus. Voters tend to notice when a candidate's convictions last only until they become inconvenient.

The real contest: Cornyn vs. Paxton

On the Republican side, the Senate race carries far more intrigue. Sen. John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton are set for a runoff election in May after neither secured more than 50% of the vote in the primary.

Trump has teased an endorsement but has yet to deliver one. In past interviews, the president expressed confidence in the electability of both GOP candidates. That restraint is notable. In a state where Trump's word carries enormous weight in Republican primaries, holding back keeps both candidates hungry and the eventual nominee undamaged by intra-party warfare.

Whichever Republican emerges from May will face Talarico in the general. And Trump's Sunday post makes clear he's already doing opposition research out loud.

What Trump is really doing

The instinct among political commentators will be to treat the Truth Social post as another Trump rant. That misses the strategy. By publicly branding Talarico early, Trump is setting the terms of a general election narrative months before it begins. The "six Genders" line, the "FRAUD" label, the comparison to Newsom: these aren't random insults. They're keyword associations designed to stick.

Trump calling Crockett "Low IQ" while simultaneously framing Talarico as the weaker opponent accomplishes something specific. It tells Texas Republicans that the Democrat they'll face is beatable, that the progressive flank of the Democratic Party chose ideology over electability, and that Trump himself is paying attention to the race.

Democrats chose a candidate who went vegan to fight climate change in a state that runs on oil and beef. Trump is simply making sure nobody forgets it.

Texas hasn't elected a Democrat to statewide office in three decades. Talarico's brand of progressive cultural politics isn't the formula that breaks that streak. Trump knows it. And now, so does everyone on Truth Social.
