Wisconsin teacher is charged with sexually assaulting multiple students and providing minors with alcohol

A 22-year-old special education teacher at Eau Claire North High School made her initial appearance in Eau Claire County Court on Monday, facing felony child sexual assault charges after authorities say she engaged in sexual relationships with students and provided them with alcohol at her apartment.

Nadia Horn, who co-taught World Studies at the school, was charged with second-degree sexual assault of a child under 16 and two counts each of child enticement and sexual assault of a child by school staff or volunteer. If convicted on all counts, she faces up to 40 years in prison and $100,000 in fines, Fox News reported.

Following her court appearance, a judge set a $15,000 cash bond. Horn posted it shortly after.

What Investigators Found

The investigation began on March 25 when the Eau Claire Area School District flagged a "potential inappropriate relationship" with a School Resource Officer. What unfolded from there was far worse than a single lapse in judgment.

According to the criminal complaint, Horn admitted to having sexual intercourse with one victim three times at her Eau Claire apartment. She also admitted to sexual encounters with a second 16-year-old student. One victim reportedly told police they had done "everything sexual you can do with a person."

Horn also admitted to bringing three teenage boys to her apartment in March and providing the minors with wine. The contact between Horn and at least one student reportedly began through Snapchat, with one victim telling police Horn had been "Snapchatting" him and sending photos he described as "really revealing."

When confronted by investigators, Horn's response was notably thin. She told police the relationship "felt mutual" and described the encounters by saying, "I made a mistake."

A mistake is forgetting to submit grades on time. What the complaint describes is a pattern of predatory behavior by an adult entrusted with the care of minors.

The Double Standard That Won't Go Away

Every time a female teacher is charged with sexually assaulting a student, the same cultural reflex kicks in. The language softens. The coverage frames it as a "relationship" or an "affair." Social media is filled with comments about lucky kids. The seriousness of the crime gets filtered through a lens that would never be applied if the sexes were reversed.

This case is no different in its fundamentals from any other adult in a position of authority exploiting minors. Horn was a special education co-teacher. These were her students. The power imbalance is not ambiguous. The ages are not ambiguous. Wisconsin law exists precisely to address situations where an adult, particularly one in an institutional role over children, crosses this line.

The charge of "sexual assault of a child by school staff/volunteer" reflects that legal reality. The legislature understood that teachers hold authority that makes genuine consent from a student impossible, regardless of what either party claims about mutuality. Horn telling investigators it "felt mutual" is not exculpatory. It is an admission that she understood what was happening and did it anyway.

The School's Response

The Eau Claire Area School District confirmed in a letter to families that Horn has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the legal proceedings. The district is the entity that initially flagged the situation to a School Resource Officer, which at minimum suggests internal reporting mechanisms functioned as they should.

But broader questions remain. Horn is 22 years old. She was, by all appearances, recently hired and placed in a classroom with vulnerable students. How much vetting occurred before she was given access to minors in a special education setting? What safeguards exist when the age gap between teacher and student is barely a handful of years?

These are not rhetorical questions. School districts across the country face persistent challenges in screening and monitoring young staff placed in close contact with teenagers. The answer is never to lower the bar for accountability simply because the perpetrator is young, female, or described as relatable.

What Comes Next

Horn is scheduled to return to court for a hearing on May 20. The charges she faces are serious, and the potential penalties reflect that. Forty years and six figures in fines are not tokens. They represent how Wisconsin law categorizes crimes against children committed by those in positions of trust.

Whether the system follows through is another matter. Sentencing in cases involving female perpetrators and male victims has historically been lighter than comparable cases with the genders reversed. That pattern is worth watching here.

A teacher invited students to her apartment, gave minors alcohol, and sexually assaulted children she was hired to educate. She posted bond and walked out the same day. The students she exploited will carry this far longer than that.
