Kentucky man arrested for boating under the influence as 19-year-old passenger remains missing at Grayson Lake

A 23-year-old Kentucky man faces a boating under the influence charge after a 19-year-old woman vanished from his pontoon boat on Grayson Lake, and days later, searchers still have not found her.

Cameron Conley alerted staff at Grayson Lake Marina on Wednesday that his passenger, Marly Kinney, was no longer on his boat and that he could not find her. Kentucky State Police and the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources responded. When troopers arrived, they smelled alcohol on Conley's breath. He admitted he had been drinking and agreed to a breath test, Fox News Digital reported, citing court records obtained by local station FOX 56.

His blood-alcohol content registered at 0.137 percent. A second reading twenty minutes later came back at 0.135 percent, nearly double the legal limit in Kentucky. Conley was arrested, taken to the Carter County Detention Center, and later released.

As of Saturday morning, Kinney had not been found. The search had entered its third day.

A young woman disappears, and key questions remain unanswered

Lt. Chris Mulholland of the Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources told WSAZ that Kinney had been missing since 4 p.m. Wednesday and that she was on the boat with many other people. Officials, Mulholland said, were not sure when she left the boat.

That single detail, no one can say when or how a 19-year-old woman departed a pontoon boat full of passengers, sits at the center of this case. Was she seen entering the water? Did she simply cease to be present at some point during the outing? The fact pack available from officials offers no answers.

Nor is it clear how many people were aboard, whether other passengers have been interviewed, or what they told law enforcement. Conley has been charged only with boating under the influence. No charge related directly to Kinney's disappearance has been announced.

Family pleads for help as search grinds on

Kinney's sister, Willow VanHoose, took to Facebook on Thursday, posting pictures of Kinney and describing what she was wearing when she was last seen:

"She was wearing a pink-orange bikini that is strapless, and is likely to have no shoes. She wears gold jewelry and usually has a dainty gold cross necklace on. She has many tattoos, a sword down her side, a spider on her thigh going around it, butterflies on her arm, a tiger on her arm, and fairies on her shoulder."

The description is the kind of granular detail a family puts out when they are desperate for any lead at all. Every tattoo. Every piece of jewelry. The hope behind it is plain.

Kinney's family released a statement to WSAZ expressing gratitude for the search effort:

"We do not even know how to express our absolute gratitude to you all. We continue to have faith she will be found and brought back to us. We know we have the very best people doing all they can to bring her home."

By Friday, a group of 50 volunteers had joined the search along the lake banks. On-and-off rain hampered operations throughout the day. Authorities deployed sonar, K-9 teams, and drones equipped with thermal detectors, resources that suggest officials are treating the possibility of a drowning seriously, even if the case has not been publicly classified as one.

Weather and silence

Lisa Jackson, a spokesperson for the Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, told Fox News on Saturday morning that there were no new updates.

"I understand from our game wardens at the scene that there are no new updates. With weather moving through the area throughout the day, the search is continuing as weather permits."

Carter County sits roughly 90 miles east of Lexington in Kentucky's rural interior. Grayson Lake is the kind of place families and young people go for summer weekends on the water. That a day on a pontoon boat ended with a BUI arrest and a missing teenager is the sort of tragedy that hits small communities hard.

The case carries echoes of other disappearances that have gripped communities and left families waiting for answers, not unlike the string of vanished individuals tied to sensitive government work that has raised separate but equally troubling questions about accountability and investigation.

What we still don't know

The gaps in the public record here are wide. Officials have not said whether Kinney's disappearance has been classified as a missing persons case, a potential drowning, or something else. The specific court handling Conley's BUI charge has not been named. The terms of his release, bond, recognizance, conditions, are unclear.

Most importantly, no one has publicly explained how a young woman vanished from a boat full of people without anyone apparently noticing when or how she left. That question will loom over whatever comes next in this investigation.

Conley admitted to drinking. His BAC spoke for itself. But a BUI charge, however warranted, does not answer the question that matters most to Marly Kinney's family: where is she?

A 19-year-old woman is missing. A man nearly twice the legal alcohol limit was driving the boat. And no one on board can say what happened. The facts speak loudly enough on their own.
