Talarico may reject the socialist label, but he still needs their donor cash

Texas Democrat James Talarico calls himself a proud capitalist, yet he is raising big money in New York with hosts tied to socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani and open revolution talk.

James Talarico is locked in a high-stakes Texas Senate fight with Attorney General Ken Paxton, and the money trail already runs through Manhattan. On Monday night the progressive Democrat shared a swanky Human Rights Campaign PAC event with former Sen. Sherrod Brown, tickets topping out at $27,000, as actor Robert De Niro lent Hollywood gloss to the room.

The host committee was stacked with names from Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s fundraising network. That is the same Mamdani orbit Republicans keep tying to national Democrats, and it is the cash Talarico needs if forecasts of a near half-billion-dollar race prove right. Washington Examiner reporting framed the bind plainly: New York liberal money versus Texas voters who have not handed Democrats a statewide win since 1984.

Tuesday night brought a second stop in Greenwich Village. The top suggested contribution there was $13,500, and Talarico appeared solo. The price tag dropped. The dependency on out-of-state progressive networks did not.

Mamdani’s circle filled the host list

Names on the committee told the story. Alexis Bittar, Shaifali Puri, and Shruti Ganguly all surfaced in the Mamdani world, Puri on the mayor’s legal-affairs side, Ganguly described as a family friend. The New York Post reported the Ohio-Texas victory reception drew socialist-friendly New York donors and listed additional Mamdani-linked hosts.

Talarico’s campaign has called him a “proud capitalist” and worked to keep distance from the Democratic Socialists of America, even as that faction dominates more of his party’s airwaves. The donor list undercuts the branding. When the checks are written by the same network that powered a socialist mayor, voters can judge the gap for themselves, much as they have watched Talarico’s shifting ground on transgender athletes in girls’ sports.

Bittar is not a quiet bundler. He is a jeweler and filmmaker who has poured energy into socialist candidates, donated the maximum to Mamdani’s transition, and served on the mayor’s arts committee. He previously hosted for Michigan’s socialist-aligned Senate hopeful Abdul El-Sayed, the same far-left lane that has produced other Democratic headaches.

Host’s own words leave little doubt

Fox News detailed Bittar’s record of backing Democratic Socialists and declaring that traditional Democrats “have one foot in the grave” while “the revolution has begun.” He has urged supporters to bring in “all the Democrat Socialists” to “change America.”

In an Interview Magazine sit-down timed near the nation’s 250th celebrations, Bittar did not soften the edge. He said:

"I mean, I have three kids, and they're little, and they're growing up in this s***hole. So if we don't do something now, we're f***ed."

He has also cast the American flag as a “symbol of aggression.” Parents who were socialists, public revolution talk, and maximum support for Mamdani form a clear pattern. The Washington Free Beacon underscored those far-left credentials while noting Bittar’s role hosting Talarico and Brown.

That is the company a self-described capitalist keeps when the Senate map demands enormous sums. It tracks with other progressive associations already dogging Talarico, including the moment he named a drag performer who works with children as a favorite.

Out-of-state money collides with “people powered” talk

Talarico sells a Texas-rooted, people-powered story at home. The receipts look different. Breitbart reported that more than 55 percent of his campaign contributions came from out-of-state donors while he courted Wall Street and Hollywood progressives.

Paxton is a hardened statewide brand. Democrats have not broken through in Texas at this level in four decades. Spending projections that climb toward half a billion dollars explain why a state legislator would fly to Manhattan, pocket $27,000 tickets, and smile beside De Niro. They do not erase the ideological price tag attached to Mamdani’s network.

The same progressive bench keeps surfacing in other Senate fights. Michigan’s lane has seen Ocasio-Cortez back a far-left primary candidate against party leadership, and similar radical associations have drawn public pushback from figures like Sen. John Fetterman. Talarico’s New York swing fits the wider pattern: national left money first, local branding second.

Texas voters get the contrast

Campaigns can paper over contradictions for a while. A “proud capitalist” headline works until the host committee reads like a socialist mayor’s reunion and the star fundraiser calls the country a s***hole while cheering Democrat Socialists.

Talarico still has to win actual Texans. Recent stops have not all been friendly; he already faced a hostile crowd at a Houston town hall as outreach sputtered. Pair that turbulence with Manhattan check-writing from Mamdani allies and the message notes itself.

Brown’s presence added establishment weight. De Niro added celebrity. Neither changes who built the host list or what those hosts say out loud about revolution, the flag, and the country they want to remake. Senate candidates who need that network should expect voters to notice.

Far-left donors do not pen five-figure checks for moderation. They draft them for leverage. Talarico can keep the capitalist label on the brochure; the fundraising circuit shows which coalition he cannot afford to lose.
