Biden stays mostly off midterm trail as Obama and Harris pick up the Democratic load

Former President Joe Biden remains largely absent from the midterm campaign trail while battling metastatic prostate cancer, leaving Barack Obama and Kamala Harris to shoulder the Democratic push as some party elites still see him as a liability.

With four weeks left until Election Day, Democrats are fighting to reclaim majorities in the House and Senate. Biden has kept a limited public schedule, endorsed candidates, and helped raise money, yet he has made only a handful of political appearances this year, Fox News reported.

Obama has cut ads for Senate and gubernatorial candidates, helped the party fundraise, and prepared to hit the trail in the closing stretch. Harris has campaigned across key battleground states, including a recent stop in Michigan with Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed.

The contrast is hard to miss. Biden, now 83, is dealing with advanced, metastatic prostate cancer. That health fight, along with the sour aftertaste of 2024, has kept him mostly sidelined even as the party needs every available draw.

Party strategists split on whether Biden helps or hurts

Longtime Democratic strategist Michael Ceraso told Fox News Digital that some in the party’s elite and fundraising class worry about putting Biden forward.

"If Biden were to be pushed out there in any sort of way for virtual or in-person opportunities, he could be a liability."

Ceraso added that Biden left a "bad taste with some Democrats, especially within the party's elite and fundraising class." He also said Biden lacks the same pull as Harris or Obama when organizers need to pack a room.

"I do not think Biden has the same level of charisma as [Vice President Harris] and former President Obama, and if I'm organizing an event to get thousands of people to come out, I would not do that around Biden."

Veteran strategist and Democratic National Committee member Maria Cardona struck a warmer note, saying many Americans still love Biden. She argued his health is the real brake on campaign requests.

"I guarantee you no one would try to bother him to come campaign for them while, at 83 years old, he is battling cancer and in the toughest fight of his life."

Fox News Digital reached out to a Biden spokesman for comment and received no response by publication time.

Cancer diagnosis and the limited schedule

Biden’s office revealed he is battling an aggressive form of prostate cancer. National Review reported that he later broke his silence with a grateful social media post alongside Jill Biden, writing that cancer touches everyone and thanking supporters for lifting them up.

Doctors, including Zeke Emanuel, have said the disease likely developed during or before his presidency, with Emanuel stating Biden probably had it at the start of his term in 2021. Just The News also covered the prostate cancer diagnosis and the questions it raised about earlier health transparency.

Family members have spoken publicly about the spread of the disease, including coverage of Hunter Biden revealing the cancer has spread and calling the outlook difficult.

Those health realities line up with the thin political calendar. Biden spoke in February at a reception marking his 2020 South Carolina primary victory and addressed a Maryland Democratic Party event in June. A fundraising appearance with the South Carolina Democratic Party was set for Feb. 27, 2026, at the Columbia Museum of Art on the sixth anniversary of that primary win. Beyond those stops and a few others, the trail has largely belonged to others.

Endorsements continue even as the trail stays quiet

Biden has not vanished from party business entirely. He endorsed former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, a Biden administration senior advisor, who won the Georgia Democratic gubernatorial nomination. He also backed Dan Koh, another administration veteran, who captured the Democratic nomination in Massachusetts’ 6th Congressional District.

Last month, while casting his ballot in Delaware’s primary, Biden posted on social media about the duty of voting.

"American democracy begins and ends at the ballot box. There is no more important civic duty nor fundamental right to be defended,"... "Voting defines our freedom and makes everything possible."

That message arrived as Obama appeared at a campaign event on Nov. 1, 2025, and as Harris kept moving through battlegrounds. The division of labor is clear: endorsements and fundraising help from Biden, visible trail work from the two higher-draw names.

The same period has brought fresh attention to Biden family legal and personal matters, including Hunter Biden’s comments on his father’s pardon and how it shielded the family.

Poll numbers and the 2024 hangover

Biden left office with weak marks. The final Fox News poll of his White House tenure, in January 2025, showed 42% approval and 57% disapproval. A CNN poll in May found him with a 71% favorable rating among Democrats, 25 points lower than Obama’s standing with the same group.

Some Democrats still blame him for not exiting the 2024 race sooner after his debate performance against Donald Trump. Trump and fellow Republicans, for their part, have repeatedly tied high gas and diesel prices to the Biden years. Those arguments keep the former president in the conversation even when he is not on the stump.

Memoir news has added another layer of distraction for the party. Coverage of the Biden memoir announcement as an unwelcome midterm distraction underscored how personal projects can pull focus from the races at hand.

A separate report tracked Biden’s presidential memoir set for release after the November midterms, keeping the former president’s name in headlines without putting him on a stage with candidates.

Harris and Biden were last seen together in a major official setting on Jan. 15, 2025, speaking in the White House Cross Hall on an Israel-Hamas ceasefire deal. Since then the public partnership has been thin. Obama’s Saturday campaign appearance and Harris’s Michigan stop show where the party is placing its visible energy.

Readers following Biden family developments have also seen Hunter Biden appear alongside Tucker Carlson in a high-profile interview rejecting antisemitism charges, another reminder that the family’s public profile remains active even as the former president’s campaign schedule stays light.

What the closing weeks make plain

Democrats need turnout in November. They are deploying Obama’s fundraising reach and Harris’s battleground travel while Biden supplies endorsements, money help, and the occasional party event. Strategists openly debate whether more of him would help or hurt. Cardona points to the cancer fight and lasting affection. Ceraso points to liability fears and weaker draw.

The numbers and the calendar tell the same story. Four weeks out, the former president who ousted Trump in 2020 and then left the 2024 race after a damaging debate is not the face of the midterm sprint. Obama and Harris are. Health limits, 2024 scars, and elite caution have produced a quiet role for Biden at the exact moment his party is scrambling for majorities.

When a party keeps its most recent president mostly off the trail in a tight midterm fight, voters can judge for themselves what that silence says about confidence, consequences, and accountability.
