The choice of "abide" as the theme for this year is inspired by the biblical verses John 15:4-5, which call on followers to remain spiritually connected to Jesus. The verses highlight the necessity of staying joined to Christ for spiritual nourishment and growth.

"Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing," these verses frame the ethos of the gathering.

By focusing on these passages, the gathering encouraged attendees to reflect on their spiritual journeys and how they connect to their daily lives and ministries.

The Rev. Beth Allin, the director of communications for ECO, expressed that the gathering aimed to reinvigorate the spiritual lives of its members, especially those from small or rural congregations who might feel isolated in their ministerial roles.

"Many of our leaders are in small or rural churches and isolated, so it's an in-person reminder for them to know they are loved by Jesus and never alone in ministry," said Allin. This sentiment underscores the importance of the national gathering in fostering a sense of belonging and community support.

Allin also mentioned the diversity of the attendees, highlighting the inclusion of many newcomers and ministry teams eager to learn and engage in fellowship.

Impact on Attendees and Future Plans

Cognizant of the spiritual and emotional needs of its members, the gathering this year skipped legislative discussions, choosing instead to focus on worship and devotional practices. This decision was made to provide a restful and enriching experience for all attendees.

"We sensed from previous years that people's souls needed a rest, so we focused quite a bit on abiding through worship and devotions during main sessions," Allin noted. By prioritizing these elements, the event catered to the foundational needs of those present.

Discussions on legislative issues and structural decisions are scheduled to take place at the next gathering, which will be held in Atlanta, Georgia.

Year-Long Connections and Support

ECO, originally the Evangelical Covenant Order of Presbyterians, established itself in response to the Presbyterian Church (USA)'s Amendment 10a. This amendment allowed the ordination of individuals in same-sex relationships, prompting some congregations to form ECO.

With about 450 member congregations, many of which transitioned from the Presbyterian Church (USA), ECO prioritizes maintaining a tight-knit community and ongoing support among its members.

"Our name is 'A Covenant Order' of Evangelical Presbyterians, so we hope that people stay connected throughout the year and rely on each other for support, encouragement, ideas, and prayer," added Allin, emphasizing the community-driven vision of the denomination.

The gathering not only provided an avenue for worship and learning but also a platform for celebration and joy among the attendees. "There is a great sense of joy among our people at the National Gathering," Allin remarked.
