American pastor coordinates massive rice delivery to Gaza Christians

In a remarkable feat amid ongoing conflict, Pastor William Devlin enabled the delivery of 23 tons of rice to Christians in Gaza, overcoming significant logistical challenges.

According to the Christian Post, This initiative aided hundreds of families sheltering in churches amid strife following Hamas' recent aggressions.

Since October 2023, following a series of attacks by Hamas, Pastor William Devlin of New York's Infinity Bible Church has become a lifeline for Gaza's Christian community. Coordination between Samaritan’s Purse, the Order of St. John of Jerusalem Hospitallers, and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) made the delivery possible, a mission fraught with skepticism and potential dangers.

Devlin, experienced in conflict zones, has made over 30 humanitarian trips to Gaza. His collaboration for this mission began after intense planning and negotiation, ensuring that the aid would reach those truly in need.

Massive Rice Shipment Finds Its Way to Gaza Churches

The massive shipment of rice came from Thailand, demonstrating the global effort behind the mission. The Order of St. John of Jerusalem Hospitallers funded the purchase and shipment, contributing around $35,000 to the cause.

The volatile situation in Gaza created significant transportation challenges. Israel has actively worked to dismantle Hamas and secure the release of over 250 hostages kidnapped on October 7, 2023. As a result, the region has experienced severe disruptions, including shortages worsened by concurrent conflicts such as Hezbollah's rocket attacks on Northern Israel.

Pastor Devlin coordinated the final leg of the delivery from Ashdod, Israel, to Gaza on November 11, 2024. The rice was quickly transported to the Holy Family Catholic Church and St. Porphyria Greek Orthodox Church, where over 225 families have taken refuge since the conflict began.

Overcoming Doubts and Security Challenges

Many doubted the feasibility of the project. "They said to me, 'Pastor Devlin, it is impossible to get that rice from Ashdod into Gaza…It's an active war zone, and even if it gets in, it's going to be looted,'" Devlin recounted the skepticism he faced.

Furthermore, the region's instability often leads to humanitarian aid being pilfered by Hamas or sold on the black market, adding another layer of complexity to aid efforts. However, careful planning and coordination with security forces ensured the rice reached its intended destination without interference.

Regarding the successful delivery, Devlin shared his relief and satisfaction, stating, "It was a God thing. Because 35 organizations and some 50 people within them, they said the rice will never get to the intended place. Well, guess what? The rice was delivered to the two churches untouched."

Pastor Devlin’s Motivational Beliefs and Future Plans

In light of the challenges, Devlin often reflected on a biblical sentiment to maintain his resolve. He cited Luke 18:27 during the operation, a verse that reinforces faith in divine possibility: "What is impossible with man is possible with God." This belief fueled his persistence in ensuring that the aid reached those in dire need.

As the conflict continues, the needs of Gaza's civilian population remain pressing. Devlin's successful mission has paved the way for further aid operations, demonstrating that with meticulous planning and collaboration, essential assistance can be delivered even in the most fraught environments.

The story of this significant achievement in humanitarian aid is not just about the logistics and the challenges overcome but also about the message of hope it brings to a region riddled with strife. Pastor Devlin and his team's efforts exemplify how dedication and faith can bridge gaps that seem insurmountable, bringing essential relief to those caught in crisis.

The endeavor, while fraught with risks and doubts, ultimately stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and faith in times of adversity. The communities sheltering in Gaza's churches now have crucial sustenance as they face the uncertainties ahead, thanks to this remarkable delivery.
