Anti-ICE activist disrupts Minnesota church, linked to D.C. harassment

On a quiet Sunday, a group of anti-ICE activists stormed into Cities Church in the Twin Cities, turning a peaceful service into a platform for protest.

This past Sunday, protesters disrupted a service at Cities Church in Minnesota, shouting slogans like "ICE out" and "Justice for Renee Good" while accusing a pastor of leading ICE’s St. Paul field office. The identified agitator, William Kelly, known online as "DaWokeFarmer," is also accused of harassing congregants at Christ Church in Washington, D.C., for months. The Minnesota incident follows increased tensions over ICE operations in the state after the fatal shooting of Renee Good by an agent.

Church Disruptions Spark Wider Concerns

The issue has sparked debate over the boundaries of protest and the sanctity of religious spaces. While activism has its place, many question whether disrupting worship crosses a line into disrespect.

At Cities Church, the protesters targeted pastor David Easterwood, alleging he oversees local ICE operations linked to controversial tactics. The Justice Department has confirmed it is investigating the incident, though details remain sparse. It’s a messy situation, and the optics of shouting down a congregation aren’t exactly winning hearts and minds, as Fox News reports.

In Washington, D.C., Christ Church—attended by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth—has faced similar disturbances for months. Associate pastor Joe Rigney described Kelly as a persistent figure, known for aggressive behavior and profanity aimed at families. If the goal is dialogue, berating children and churchgoers seems a curious strategy.

William Kelly’s Aggressive Protest Tactics

Kelly, with over 66,000 TikTok followers under the handle "DaWokeFarmer," posts videos railing against ICE and the Trump administration with colorful language. His online presence links to a GoFundMe page that’s raised over $40,000 for his cross-country activism. Funding protest tours is one thing, but does it justify the disruption of private worship?

Christ Church members say Kelly’s harassment began around September or October, escalating to the point of following people to their cars. Rigney noted, "Kelly stood out because he was one of the more aggressive, angry, vile, profane protesters who would follow people to their car, yell at them, yell at children." That kind of behavior doesn’t scream "justice"—it screams intimidation.

An anonymous Christ Church member told Fox News Digital, "William Kelly is a regular outside our church, he screams incredibly vile and gross things at families, at children, at people." The same member added that Metro PD has ensured physical safety but struggles to take legal action. It’s a frustrating bind—free speech is vital, but so is the right to pray without being heckled.

Legal Troubles and Public Backlash

Kelly’s antics caught the attention of the U.S. Secret Service, leading to an arrest in December after a filmed confrontation where he berated someone as a "Nazi." He later claimed on TikTok that disorderly conduct charges are pending, though the Secret Service hasn’t commented. Legal consequences might be the only way to draw a line here.

In Minnesota, protests against ICE have surged since the shooting of Renee Good, with the Trump administration stating she attempted to ram an agent with her vehicle. Activists dispute this, pointing to broader concerns over ICE’s methods. Context matters, but storming a church risks alienating even sympathetic observers.

Deputy Under Secretary of War Justin Overbaugh identified Kelly as the same man harassing D.C. congregants, noting on X that Metro PD hasn’t acted despite disruptions with bullhorns. It’s a pattern—loud tactics, little accountability. When does protest become just noise?

Balancing Free Speech and Respect

Kelly himself addressed the Minnesota incident on TikTok, alongside activist Nekima Armstrong, defending his actions with heated rhetoric. His approach, laced with profanity, undercuts any moral high ground he might claim. Passion for a cause doesn’t excuse trampling on others’ peace.

Christ Church members just want to worship without fear of verbal assaults. Rigney emphasized that even their security team flagged Kelly from the Minnesota video as a familiar face. It’s telling when a protester’s reputation for hostility precedes him across state lines.

The debate over ICE policies, especially after tragic incidents like Renee Good’s death, deserves serious discussion. But tactics matter, and turning sanctuaries into battlegrounds alienates more than it inspires. There’s a way to fight for justice without making enemies of everyday people.
