At least one dead, 11 hurt in North Carolina party shooting
More than 80 gunshots disrupted a late-night house party in Catawba County, North Carolina, early Sunday, resulting in one death and injuries to 11 others in a scene described by one witness as "like a movie."
According to the Christian Post, the shooting erupted shortly after midnight at a large gathering in the Mountain View community, where investigators now suspect multiple shooters firing from various positions across several properties.
According to officials, the incident began around 12:45 a.m. on Walnut Acres Drive in the typically quiet Mountain View neighborhood located about seven miles south of Hickory. The party, reportedly a large pool gathering, attracted nearly 100 attendees, many of whom were believed to be high school students.
The violence claimed the life of 58-year-old Shawn Patrick Hood of Lenoir, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not disclosed how Hood was connected to the party, nor have they indicated whether he was a targeted victim or caught in crossfire.
Among the 11 injured, individuals ranged in age from 16 to 58. Law enforcement officials confirmed Sunday that seven of the wounded were still being treated in hospitals, with at least one victim in critical condition.
Gunfire Spread Across Multiple Areas and Properties
Investigators believe the gunfire came from various directions and impacted both indoor and outdoor areas over approximately two acres. The scope of the shooting has led authorities to conclude that more than one shooter, and potentially several types of firearms, were involved.
Major Aaron Turk of the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office revealed that investigators recovered several shell casings at the scene. He stated that “at least one long weapon was believed to have been used,” though the total number of weapons fired has not yet been confirmed.
Authorities initially reported over 80 shots were fired during the incident, though they later indicated the actual number may be higher as the investigation continues and evidence is processed.
Witnesses Describe Panic as Shots Rang Out
The sudden eruption of gunfire created chaos at the party. Witnesses on the scene recalled people running for safety, some attempting to flee in vehicles while others sought cover within the home or nearby yards.
One neighbor, who spoke to local news outlet WBTV, described being awakened by the barrage of gunfire. “I heard a lot of shots going off and people running to the front,” the witness said. “I ain't ever seen anything like this; it was like a movie.”
Authorities believe that some of the injuries may have occurred during the scramble to escape, as attendees tried to flee from the scene in the dark and confusion.
Deputies Were at the Scene Just Hours Prior
Officials confirmed that deputies had visited the property just two hours before the deadly gunfire, responding to a noise complaint about the party. The home was known to law enforcement due to prior complaints.
Despite this earlier visit, no formal action was taken, and the party continued into the early morning hours before erupting into violence.
The house, described by neighbors as a generally quiet residential address, had drawn attention earlier due to the large number of attendees and the noise level during the event.
Investigation Involves Multiple Agencies and Appeals for Help
As of Sunday evening, no arrests had been made and no suspects had been publicly identified. Officials have not announced whether the shooters aimed at specific individuals or were firing indiscriminately into the crowd.
The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation and is working in coordination with the FBI, which has deployed a specialized evidence response team to the scene. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the Hickory Police Department are also supporting the inquiry.
Authorities are asking the public, particularly those who attended the party or have relevant information, to come forward with any details that can aid the investigation. The case remains open and active as law enforcement continues to gather evidence and interview witnesses.
