Boko Haram targets pastors and communities in Nigeria
In a tragic escalation of violence, Boko Haram militants assassinated Pastor Bala Galadima while he slept in his home in Lubo, Gombe State, Nigeria.
According to the Christian Post, This recent attack targets Christian leadership and exacerbates the fears of the local community.
Early Sunday morning, around 1 a.m., suspected militants from Boko Haram forcefully entered Lubo, firing shots into the air to instill terror among residents. They initially approached a house they mistakenly believed to be Pastor Galadima's.
Assailants Demanded Information Under Threat
Under the threat of gunfire, the attackers demanded locals direct them to Pastor Galadima’s residence. Dressed in black robes, the militants continued their targeted assault upon finding his home, located on the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) premises where Galadima resided.
Within moments, the assailants shot Pastor Galadima at point-blank range in the back while he lay in bed, ensuring his immediate death. The intensity and brutality of the attack have left the local religious community in a state of profound mourning and fear.
Lami Sabo, a member of the congregation, expressed the community's deep loss, stating, “Our hearts are heavy, as we are left alone in a complicated world with the killing of our pastor, Rev. Bala Galadima.”
Local Police Respond to the Tragic Incident
The Gombe State Police were alerted and arrived at the scene shortly after the assailants fled. In response to this violent act and the ongoing threat in the area, Gombe State Commissioner of Police Bello Yahaya visited the hospital where Galadima's body was taken and has since deployed a special police squad to safeguard the region.
Officer Buhari Abdullahi from the police command assured the public, stating, “We have coordinated a special operation, and we are confident that the culprits will be arrested.” Despite these assurances, the local population remains anxious about their security.
The broader context of this attack reflects a continuing pattern of aggression towards Christian communities in northeastern Nigeria by Boko Haram. The extremist group has been responsible for multiple assaults on Christians, aiming at destabilizing communities and instigating religious conflicts.
Recent Series of Boko Haram Attacks in Nigeria
Throughout January, neighboring Borno State witnessed several attacks by Boko Haram, which impacted many communities and caused numerous casualties and considerable property damage. On January 30, similar violent acts continued as Boko Haram militants attacked Kauthlama village in Chibok County. They burned down a Church of the Brethren building and other properties while abducting livestock.
Residents like Paul Mauntah detailed the events of January 30, stating, “This is a report about a distressing incident that occurred at 11:46 a.m., in Kauthlama B. Unfortunately, a church and several shops were burnt down, and livestock, including cows, goats, and sheep, were taken away by Boko Haram terrorists.”
Amos Dauda, a member of the EYN church, criticized the government and security officials for underestimating the capabilities of Boko Haram in the region, noting, “The repeated claims by government officials and security agencies that Boko Haram has been weakened are being contradicted by the recent devastating attacks.”
Community Appeals for Support and Security
The cumulative effect of these attacks has left many in dire need of support. Paul Mauntah pleaded, “The people of Chibok LGA are in dire need of support and protection. The ongoing insecurity has caused immense suffering, and our leaders must take concrete steps to address the root causes of the conflict and provide adequate support to those affected.”
The community's resilience is being severely tested as they face these repeated attacks. The death of Pastor Galadima is a grim reminder of the constant threat they live under. The local and national authorities are under increasing pressure to provide tangible solutions to safeguard their citizens and restore peace in the region.
Meanwhile, the congregation of ECWA Church Lubo mourns their leader and friend. “We members of ECWA Church Lubo will miss him. It’s very hard for us to say goodbye to our general in the Lord, Rev. Bala Galadima,” said Lami Sabo, echoing the sentiment of a community shattered yet striving for peace and normalcy amid loss.
