Celebrity pastor TD Jakes files defamation lawsuit over sexual assault claims

Megachurch leader TD Jakes has initiated a defamation lawsuit against Duane Youngblood, a former pastor who accused him of sexual assault dating back more than four decades. This legal battle shines a spotlight on allegations that have stunned followers nationwide.

According to the Daily Mail, Megachurch pastor TD Jakes vehemently denies accusations of sexual assault made by former pastor Duane Youngblood, deeming them a smear campaign.

According to legal documents, TD Jakes, currently 67 years old and senior pastor at The Potter's House, brought the lawsuit in November 2024 after Duane Youngblood, 58, made allegations on a podcast last year. Youngblood claimed that Jakes attempted to forcibly kiss him over 40 years ago, an assertion that has led to this high-profile legal confrontation.

The allegations gained further complexity last month when Richard Youngblood, Duane's brother, filed an affidavit supporting Duane's defense against Jakes' defamation lawsuit. Richard described an alleged incident involving Jakes trying to sexually assault him by entering his hotel bed, pressing his body against him, and making a sexual advance.

Details of the Alleged Incident

Richard Youngblood vividly details the alleged encounter in his affidavit, claiming that Jakes pressed his body against him and attempted to initiate unwanted contact. "He grabbed me by my arms, pulled me to him, and started trying to kiss me," Richard stated, expressing his shock over the incident.

However, Jakes has firmly denied these accusations from both Duane and Richard, calling them fabrications. In his statement, he described these claims as a "campaign of lies" and strongly refuted any inappropriate behavior or "carnal desires" toward these men.

Jakes argues in his lawsuit that these allegations are both false and part of an extortion scheme by the Youngblood brothers, who, he claims, sought $6 million from him. He has characterized the accusations as a personal and legal assault intended to damage his reputation and extort money.

Jakes' Response to the Claims

Jakes has been vocal about his innocence, offering detailed rebuttals to each of the accusations laid out by the Youngblood brothers. "To be clear: while I occasionally traveled to Pennsylvania around 1986... I never tried to corner, grab, or kiss any teenagers... I never phoned Duane Youngblood to proposition him for sex in exchange for financial support... I never groomed, sexually abused, sexually assaulted, or engaged in predatory conduct of a sexual nature toward Duane Youngblood. I never apologized to Youngblood for any such conduct because it did not happen," Jakes elaborated.

In defense of his reputation, Jakes highlighted the damage these allegations have caused to his family. "The pain it has caused my wife of 43 years and my five children, whom I have always loved, nurtured, and provided for, is simply too much to bear," he stated, pointing to the emotional toll of the accusations.

The motivation behind the allegations was also questioned by Jakes, particularly targeting Richard Youngblood's personal history, including his inability to maintain employment, multiple paternities, and a felony conviction for failing to pay child support. Jakes suggested these factors undermine Richard's credibility.

Going Forward: Legal and Public Reactions

This case continues to develop, as both the legal strategies and public reactions evolve. With a net worth of over $20 million, Jakes stands to lose not only financially but also in terms of his substantial influence if the court finds against him. Meanwhile, the Youngblood brothers maintain their stance, supported by their legal affidavits.

The defamation lawsuit is particularly significant given the stature of TD Jakes in the religious community and the serious nature of the allegations. This litigation underscores the complex interplay between public reputation, legal challenges, and personal integrity in the digital age.

The religious community and the public are closely watching the outcome of this confrontation, which could have lasting implications for how similar allegations are perceived and handled legally and publicly in the future.
