Charlie Sheen reflects on faith, calls himself ‘God curious’ at 60

Charlie Sheen, once known for his high-profile controversies and public meltdowns, is now speaking candidly about faith, doubt, and his evolving worldview.

In a wide-ranging September 26 interview with Tucker Carlson, the 60-year-old actor opened up about his spiritual journey, moments that pointed toward the divine, and how conversations with family and faith leaders have shaped his beliefs, as The Christian Post reports.

Sheen sat down for an in-depth conversation with political commentator Tucker Carlson, revealing intimate reflections about belief, personal growth, and past decisions. The discussion touched on his firing from the hit sitcom “Two and a Half Men” in 2011, his earlier connection with conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, and his public support of the "9/11 Truth" movement.

The actor’s renewed spiritual awareness, he said, was first sparked by comedian Bill Maher during an earlier televised interaction. Maher had questioned him about God, prompting Sheen to initially respond in a way that later left him feeling dissatisfied. Looking back, Sheen told Carlson he wished he had explained that, for him, “most days,” there isn't a better word to describe the concept of God.

As the conversation deepened, Sheen described a series of life moments that he believes held a "supernatural quality"—events that suggested to him that a deeper force may be at work. Although he said he continues to wrestle with doubt, those experiences helped him begin to explore spirituality more seriously.

Growing Up With Faith–But Not By Force

Sheen credited his father, actor Martin Sheen, with instilling a respectful approach to faith without coercion. Martin, a practicing Catholic, refrained from imposing his beliefs on his children, instead offering spirituality as something they could explore on their own terms.

“That was his personal journey,” Sheen reflected in the interview, “and we were welcome to climb on board, but it wasn't anything that he was going to mandate.” His father’s hands-off approach gave Sheen the autonomy to question and address his own views on religion over time.

Now, at 60, Sheen describes himself as “God curious,” a phrase he used to express both interest and caution. He acknowledged that his beliefs can shift from day to day, and that he often finds himself suspended between belief and skepticism.

A Balance Between Science and Spirituality

Despite his growing openness to faith, Sheen was clear that he had not abandoned scientific thought. He admitted that part of him still wants to hang on to a scientific framework, joking that he doesn’t want to discover he was wrong about it all in the end.

“Aren’t you allowed to wait until the last minute?” he asked humorously, when Carlson observed that many people begin looking for spiritual answers as they age. His comments, while lighthearted, underline a sincere struggle between reason and belief.

During the interview, Carlson also disclosed his own background in the Episcopal Church and affirmed his belief in God. Their mutual exchange of personal convictions created an atmosphere that allowed Sheen to speak freely, acknowledging both his hope and his disbelief.

Connections With Family and Faith Leaders

One of Sheen’s daughters, Lola, made her own public declaration of Christian faith earlier this year by sharing a baptism video. She credited the experience with helping her overcome severe anxiety, though it remains unclear how this event has influenced Sheen’s own journey.

Since his highly publicized breakdown in 2011, Sheen has reportedly maintained a thoughtful connection with Christianity through conversations with Pastor Tim Storey. The two have engaged in decade-long dialogues about spiritual matters and personal challenges.

Pastor Storey told The Christian Post in 2015 that his relationship with Sheen was ongoing and evolving. He expressed hope that Sheen would grow stronger in his journey, though he acknowledged that progress often comes in slow and uneven steps.

Seeing the World Through a New Lens

Reflecting on the progression of his views, Sheen acknowledged that he no longer believes in randomness. “I’m not controlling any part of all this—that I know for a fact,” he said. He concluded, “Nothing’s a coincidence. It’s just, everything’s connected.”

The actor’s evolving view of connection has coincided with a belief that modern science can sometimes mimic dogma. He agreed with Carlson's sentiment that scientific thinking today can become rigid rather than exploratory, ultimately echoing the role faith once played in people’s lives.

While Sheen admits he’s not ready to claim certainty when it comes to divine matters, he said he’s no longer content ignoring the mystery. “I’m not going to try to solve the unsolvable,” he said. “I’m fine being completely mystified by it.”
