Christians assaulted at church service in Rajasthan
An assault on fifty Christians during a church service in Bikaner, Rajasthan, has sparked widespread concern and condemnation.
On February 16, approximately 200 individuals stormed the service, causing injuries and significant property damage, the Christian Post reported.
The incident occurred towards the end of the Sunday service at a local church in the western Indian state. Eyewitnesses reported a chaotic scene as attackers wielding iron rods entered the church premises, vandalizing property and striking attendees.
The majority of the worshippers sustained minor injuries, but three victims suffered severe injuries. The violence abruptly ended when police forces arrived at the scene.
Witness Accounts Suggest Pre-planned Attack
The church's pastor noted a suspicious incident during the service. He mentioned, "A new member had attended the service that day and was seen sending messages minutes before the mob entered the church, at which point he ran out of the building." This statement has led many to believe that the attack was orchestrated.
Following the disruption, the attackers quickly dispersed as law enforcement reached the church. The arrival of the police marked the end of the physical attack but the beginning of a distressing interaction for the injured worshippers.
Police started questioning the victims immediately, focusing on allegations of forced conversion. This scrutiny added to the trauma of those who were just attacked.
Police Questioning Raises Concerns About Bias
Local police unexpectedly shifted their post-attack investigation toward the faith practices of the victims. "Police questioned the injured Christians afterward and accused them of forced conversions," reported Christian Solidarity Worldwide, a U.K.-based rights group closely monitoring the situation.
Officers took the pastor, his spouse, and a few congregation members to Mukta Prasad police station, where they interrogated them about allegedly forcing individuals to convert to Christianity. The group vehemently denied the accusation, and authorities did not file any formal charges.
Fearing retaliation, church members chose not to file a complaint about the attack, despite the severity of the incident. Their decision highlights the climate of fear and the difficult position that the minority Christian community often faces in regions with heightened religious tensions.
Legal Context and Community Reactions
The incident took place against the backdrop of the Rajasthan Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Bill 2025, which lawmakers recently introduced in the state legislature. This proposed bill seeks to enforce strict penalties for forced conversions, aligning with a trend seen in several Indian states, particularly those governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a Hindu nationalist party.
Christian advocacy groups and local church communities have voiced their concerns about this bill, fearing it could further threaten their religious practices and freedoms. Over 400 individuals and 30 groups have formally contacted President Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging them to provide protection against attacks and guarantee religious rights.
Tracking an alarming pattern, the United Christian Forum reported a sharp increase in attacks against Christian communities in India. The number of recorded incidents rose from 127 in 2014 to 834 by 2024, reflecting a growingly hostile environment for religious minorities.
Community Calls for Action and Solidarity
In light of these events, international and local human rights organizations are calling on Indian authorities to ensure the safety of minority communities and to uphold the secular and democratic principles enshrined in the Indian Constitution. These incidents highlight the ongoing struggle faced by minorities in regions where political and religious sentiments are deeply intertwined.
While the community attempts to heal, the dialogue about religious freedom and minority protection continues to grow, both within India and around the world. The distressing events in Rajasthan serve as a reminder of the volatility of religious coexistence in contemporary society and the continuous need for vigilance and action against religious discrimination and violence.
