Church-raised teacher Jamal Roberts wins historic 'American Idol' finale
A Mississippi physical education teacher with deep gospel roots has taken home the crown in one of the most closely watched and spiritually influenced seasons of “American Idol.”
Jamal Roberts, 27, was named the Season 23 champion during Sunday night’s live finale, becoming the recipient of the largest number of public votes in the show’s history and securing a six-figure contract and record deal, the Christian Post reported.
Roberts, who hails from Meridian, Mississippi, defeated fellow finalists John Foster and Breanna Nix to win the competition. With more people casting ballots than ever before, host Ryan Seacrest confirmed the contest had broken previous voting records for the series.
The finale featured several performances by Roberts, including his original single titled “Heal,” a rendition of a Tom Odell song released under the show’s banner, and a duet with guest mentor and artist Jelly Roll. Each song highlighted the soul, church-driven style that became his signature throughout the season.
Reflecting on his musical roots, Roberts said he began singing almost as soon as he could talk. “My grandparents found out I could sing, and I started singing in church,” he said, noting his lifelong exposure to gospel, hymns, Temptations tunes, and Michael Jackson records.
Season offered faith-filled performances and emotional stories
Roberts’ journey was a major part of his “Idol” story. He previously made it to the top three on BET’s gospel-themed competition “Sunday Best” in 2020, and returned to audition for “Idol” this year after being turned down as a teen. His tenacity, he said, was shaped by constructive criticism and a lifelong ability to persist through setbacks.
“I didn’t get defeated. I never gave up,” he said, crediting mentors, family, and his three daughters—Harmoni, 6; Lyrik, 4; and newborn Gianna—as inspirations for his journey on the show. His oldest girls were in the live audience Sunday night, cheering him on as he claimed victory just two weeks after becoming a father again.
One of the season's most emotionally resonant moments was his statement following the win. “I’m going to see my daughter, Gianna. I’ve got a lot of making up to do,” Roberts remarked, reflecting on the sacrifices required during the competition.
Special guests and judges celebrate standout season
The grand finale event was packed with performances and special appearances, including collaborations with Salt-N-Pepa, Jessica Simpson, Good Charlotte, and worship leader Brandon Lake. Lake also participated in a duet with finalist Breanna Nix, a Christian singer who placed third.
Nix, a mother of two from Denton, Texas, became known for her faith-focused artistry. “To God be all the glory,” she said after the finale. Throughout the season, she remained open about her beliefs and the role they played in shaping her song choices and message to viewers.
Judge Luke Bryan highlighted the growing presence of faith in the competition. Speaking about Nix’s impact on the competition, he noted how some contestants this year incorporated spirituality more openly than in the past, saying, “She’s never shied away from her beliefs.”
Roberts hopes to stay connected to his teaching career
With his “Idol” title in hand, Roberts now holds a $250,000 prize and a recording contract with Hollywood Records/19 Recordings. Despite the new opportunities in music, he expressed a desire to maintain ties with his students and teaching roots.
“I wasn’t doing the teaching thing for the money,” said Roberts, whose love for kids has remained central throughout his professional life. “Even if I could go back now and then, just show up and be a part of something, I plan to do that.”
During the finale, judge Lionel Richie called both Roberts and runner-up John Foster equally deserving of attention, highlighting the level of talent present at the top tier of the competition. “I’m so happy for Jamal,” Richie said, adding humorously, “I … nearly died.”
Looking ahead to Season 24 auditions
The judging panel, which also included Carrie Underwood, watched alongside millions as the vote was revealed. Underwood admitted her heart was racing during Seacrest’s signature pause before announcing Roberts as the winner.
Roberts’ consistency, voice, and humility fueled his rise throughout a season that leaned heavily into inspirational themes. With the support of guest mentor Jelly Roll and his connection to gospel traditions, Roberts stood out week to week.
Executive producer Megan Michaels Wolflick confirmed that preparations for Season 24 are already underway, with a fresh group of aspiring vocalists seeking a stage. The success of Season 23 sets high expectations for the show’s next installment.
