Colton Burpo reflects on his near-death vision two decades later

More than 20 years after claiming to visit heaven during a near-death experience, Colton Burpo continues to share his story of survival, faith, and personal mission.

Now 25, Burpo—once a toddler with a life-threatening illness—is a pastor, electrician, husband, and new father who uses his early experience to inspire others through faith-based outreach, CBN reported.

Burpo’s remarkable journey began when he experienced severe abdominal pain just before his fourth birthday. After several days of undiagnosed symptoms, doctors eventually discovered he had a ruptured appendix. His condition required emergency surgery after nearly five days of deterioration.

According to Burpo, it was during this operation that he had a supernatural encounter. He recalls detaching from his body and watching medical staff attempt to save his life. He says he also saw his parents from above in separate hospital rooms—his mother on a phone while praying, and his father, also deep in prayer.

He described this part of the experience as frightening at first. Then, he says, he found himself with Jesus on His lap, surrounded by angels singing to calm him. This vivid recollection, recounted in detail by Burpo years later, would become the foundation of his family's subsequent telling of the experience.

The Story That Became a Bestseller

Burpo’s account captured widespread attention when his family published the book “Heaven Is for Real.” It detailed his near-death vision and shaped a narrative that resonated with many readers. The book was later adapted into a 2014 film, amplifying his story globally.

Though near-death experiences often draw skepticism and debate, Burpo’s account was embraced by thousands as a message of hope. His vivid descriptions and spiritual themes helped the story connect with people across various beliefs and backgrounds.

Now, more than two decades later, Burpo reflects on his experience with gratitude and purpose. He continues to speak publicly, recounting his childhood ordeal while emphasizing the values and lessons he has carried forward into adulthood.

A Mission Rooted in the Present

As an adult, Burpo has taken on multiple roles. He works both as a worship pastor and as an electrician, balancing daily responsibilities with his spiritual calling. In recent interviews, he has shared how his past has shaped his perspective on life and what lies beyond it.

“He has called me to be a godly man, a godly husband, now a godly dad,” Burpo said, expressing his sense of purpose. While his early encounter led him to think frequently about heaven, he now focuses on living a meaningful life on Earth.

“My mindset right now is, instead of being so caught up in what’s waiting for me,” he said, “I’m going to focus on the here and now.” Burpo views his earthly life as a mission to bring others closer to God.

Faith-Driven Outreach and Public Speaking

Burpo continues to share his testimony across the country through Heaven Is for Real Ministries, the organization run by his family. His appearances often include messages of courage, belief, and preparation for the afterlife, inspired by what he says was his visit to heaven.

Despite the ongoing debate around near-death experiences, Burpo’s account has remained consistent over the years. He emphasizes not only the supernatural elements but also the emotional and spiritual growth that followed.

Reflecting on his journey, Burpo said he’s no longer afraid of what comes after this life. “I’m not afraid to meet Jesus again one day,” he stated, adding that he continues to look forward to that moment, though he now prioritizes his earthly mission.

Legacy of a Childhood Crisis

What began as a medical crisis more than two decades ago has evolved into a lifelong message for Burpo. His experience in that Nebraska hospital marked the start of a story now told in books, on screen, and from church pulpits.

Burpo’s message has transformed as he has grown older, but its core remains rooted in his claim of a divine encounter. He encourages others to live lives of purpose and to consider their own spiritual journeys.

As a husband and father himself now, he continues to impact others not only through his story but also through how he lives each day, grounded in faith, service, and family values.
