Defense Secretary Hegseth wins major Panama Canal access deal amid China pushback

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth arrived in Panama City with an ambitious mission to secure preferential passage for U.S. vessels through the strategic Panama Canal.

According to Breitbart, Hegseth successfully negotiated a groundbreaking "first and free" passage agreement for U.S. warships and auxiliary vessels through the Panama Canal, marking a significant victory in the ongoing strategic competition with China.

President Donald Trump's administration had prioritized regaining influence over the canal, which handles more than 40 percent of U.S. maritime trade. The successful negotiations followed months of diplomatic efforts, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio's February visit that convinced Panama to withdraw from China's Belt and Road Initiative.

A subsequent deal involving BlackRock's acquisition of two key ports from a Hong Kong-based company further strengthened American control over the vital waterway.

Strategic diplomatic moves reshape canal control

Hegseth's two-day diplomatic mission involved extensive meetings with Panamanian officials and military leaders. His packed schedule included visits to former U.S. military installations and the iconic Miraflores Locks. The defense secretary also participated in the 2025 Central American Security Conference, where he announced the landmark agreement.

The successful negotiation resulted in an expanded military partnership between the two nations. A new Memorandum of Understanding will increase U.S. troop presence in Panama and enhance cooperative security activities. These developments represent a significant shift in regional dynamics, particularly as Panama continues to distance itself from Chinese influence.

Chinese officials responded with accusations of American "blackmail" following the announcement. However, Hegseth remained unmoved by potential Chinese retaliation, emphasizing America's commitment to protecting its interests.

Trump administration's strategic vision pays off

A senior defense official highlighted Trump's role in creating favorable conditions for countries seeking to reduce Chinese influence.

The official shared:

President Trump's words have resonated with them in terms of negotiating the bolstering of our alliances. The reason why we're even having this conversation in the first place is because President Trump focused on the Panama Canal, and I think it's going to do lot for our country in terms of opportunity with the Panamanians, but ultimately for our hemisphere.

The transformation began with Trump's early focus on the canal's strategic importance. His administration's systematic approach included diplomatic engagement, economic incentives, and military cooperation.

These efforts culminated in Panama's decisive shift away from Chinese influence despite Beijing's attempts to maintain control through economic pressure.

Panama strengthens ties with United States

Hegseth's successful visit demonstrated Panama's commitment to strengthening its relationship with the United States.

During his tour of military facilities, he inaugurated a pier refurbished by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and visited the Jungle Warfare School. These activities symbolized the renewed military cooperation between the two nations.

The defense secretary expressed satisfaction with the trip's outcomes, praising Panama's cooperation and highlighting their joint efforts in addressing regional security challenges. His visits to various military installations underscored the historical connections between the two countries and their shared vision for future cooperation.

Regional leaders attending the Central American Security Conference witnessed the strengthening of U.S.-Panama relations firsthand. The gathering provided a platform for discussing common security concerns and reinforcing multilateral partnerships.

Critical agreement ensures American maritime dominance

The negotiated agreement ensures privileged access for U.S. vessels through the Panama Canal, a crucial victory for American maritime interests. This development carries significant implications for global trade and military logistics, as the canal serves as a vital link between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth secured a landmark agreement in Panama that guarantees preferential passage for U.S. ships through the strategic Panama Canal. The deal represents a major shift in regional influence away from China and toward the United States.

The successful negotiations, part of President Trump's broader strategy to counter Chinese influence, resulted in expanded military cooperation between the U.S. and Panama, including increased American troop presence and enhanced security partnerships. These developments ensure continued American access to this crucial maritime route while diminishing Chinese control over the vital waterway.
