Detroit Lakes Missionary Killed During Angola Service

A Detroit Lakes native, Beau Shroyer, was tragically killed in an act of violence in Angola, Africa, where he was serving as a missionary.

Beau Shroyer, 37, died unexpectedly in a violent incident on October 25 while performing missionary duties in a remote Angolan village, Detroit Lakes Tribune reported.

Beau Shroyer's Early Life and Career

Beau Shroyer grew up in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. He was an active member of his community and involved in various service roles.

Before his missionary work, Shroyer started as a member of the Detroit Lakes Police Department in 2013. His commitment to service took a new path when he changed careers to become a real estate agent, which he pursued until his move to Africa.

In 2021, driven by a profound sense of calling, Beau Shroyer, along with his wife and five children, moved to Angola, Africa. They settled in a small bush village lacking many basic amenities, preparing for a life dedicated to missionary work.

Transition to Missionary Work

This considerable life change was inspired by Shroyer's deep faith and desire to help those in desperate circumstances. The village where Shroyer was stationed is known for its significant lack of infrastructure, including electricity, sewer, and water systems, which further highlights the challenging conditions Shroyer faced.

The announcement of Beau Shroyer's death was made by Lakes Area Vineyard Lead Pastor Troy Easton, who delivered the heartbreaking news to the congregation. The community has expressed profound shock and sadness at the loss of such an inspiring figure.

A Community Mourns a Great Loss

The notice from Pastor Easton detailed the tragic circumstances of Shroyer's death, indicating it occurred during an act of violence while he was engaged in missionary work. The specifics of the incident are still not fully understood, and investigations are ongoing.

Beau Shroyer leaves behind a wife and five children, who are currently grappling with this immense loss. The family had been living in Africa since their move, fully immersing themselves in the local culture and the missionary activities that Shroyer felt so passionately about.

The Lakes Area Vineyard church and its members are reeling from the news, finding solace in their faith and the community. Pastor Easton expressed a mix of grief and faith-driven understanding in his message, emphasizing the character of God and the devout nature of Shroyer's commitment.

Reflecting on Beau Shroyer's Legacy

In Pastor Easton’s words, "Moments like these create so many unanswerable questions for us and it adds to the pain to know that we may never understand why our Father has allowed something like this to happen," continuing with, "And yet, amidst the shock and grief, we must not forget the truths found in the scriptures that point to His wise, merciful, gracious, faithful, trustworthy, and always loving character as well as the truth that Beau was a man who, because of his love for the Lord, gave His life to pointing the lost, the hurting, the desperate and the broken to the God who rescued, saved and transformed his life."

This loss has touched many within and beyond the Detroit Lakes community. The church is planning a memorial service to honor Beau Shroyer's life and legacy, intending to celebrate the profound impact he had on the lives of many through his missionary work.

In conclusion, the life and untimely death of Beau Shroyer bring to light the realities and risks associated with missionary work in remote regions. His commitment to his faith and his unyielding desire to help others will be remembered by those who knew him and learned of his life's work.

Shroyer’s family, friends, and church community continue to seek answers and cope with this devastating loss as they hold onto their faith and the spirit of a man who lived to serve others.
