Disney retires Muppet Vision after 34 years

After more than three decades of entertaining guests with zany humor, Jim Henson’s beloved Muppet Vision 3D at Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios will give its final performance on June 7, marking the end of an era.

According to the Daily Mail, the iconic Muppet Vision 3D show at Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Florida, will have its final performance on June 7. The closure clears the way for a brand-new Monsters, Inc.-themed land, sparking frustration among longtime fans who see the move as another blow to Disney’s legacy of classic American entertainment.

For many, the sudden end of an era sting. While Disney claims the move is part of its ongoing effort to update and modernize attractions, some families argue that it’s just the latest example of “out with the old, in with the new”—and not everyone is cheering.

Fans mourn loss of tradition

Parkgoers have flooded social media with tributes, remembering the quirky 3D theater show that’s entertained generations since its 1991 debut. Created by legendary puppeteer Jim Henson, Muppet Vision 3D mixed slapstick humor and cutting-edge visuals in a way few theme park attractions ever have.

One fan wrote, “Yesterday was my final time seeing Muppet Vision 3D before it closes on June 7th. I have lost a lot of attractions I like, but you have always been my favorite, and you will be terribly missed.” Others echoed similar sentiments, with one visitor admitting, “Was at Hollywood Studios all day as I tried to soak up all the Muppety goodness that I could before Muppet Vision 3D gets torn down.”

Henson and Disney began work on the show in 1989, just before Henson’s untimely death. The attraction opened exactly one year after he passed away, and it remains the final film he ever directed—featuring his own voice as Kermit the Frog. For many, that legacy is irreplaceable.

Disney’s expansion plans spark debate

Disney’s decision to close Muppet Vision 3D is tied to larger plans for Hollywood Studios. A new Monsters, Inc. area is set to replace the show, featuring the company’s first-ever suspended roller coaster, a themed restaurant, and a new theater experience. While some guests are excited about these changes, others are not convinced.

Longtime fans argue that Disney is prioritizing flashy IP-driven expansions over the timeless charm that built its reputation. The company’s removal of River of America and Tom Sawyer Island—classic, Americana-inspired attractions—has already generated backlash from families who see these moves as a rejection of Walt Disney’s original vision.

Even some Disney loyalists are skeptical of the current strategy, questioning if newer attractions can ever match the heart and humor of Jim Henson’s work. The ongoing debate has fueled larger conversations about the direction of Disney parks under new management and whether the company is losing touch with its roots.

Muppets not gone for good

Despite the closure, Disney insists the Muppets will remain part of Hollywood Studios. The company has announced that the Muppet characters will take over the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster ride, teaming up with “music’s biggest stars” for a “rockin’ music festival” experience. Details remain scarce, but Disney promises “laughter, screams and new tunes” in the revamped attraction.

Still, the exact timeline for the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster update is unclear. Some fans worry that the Muppets’ presence in the park will be diminished or that their signature style will be overshadowed by modern trends and celebrity cameos. Others are cautiously optimistic that the new ride will keep the spirit of Henson’s creations alive.

Meanwhile, Hollywood Studios is not the only Disney park undergoing changes. Construction has already begun on Cars and Villains-themed lands in Magic Kingdom, and new attractions—including an Encanto river ride, an Indiana Jones adventure, and a Zootopia show—are in the works across Disney’s global properties. The company is even building a new park on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Ticket prices, tradition, and backlash

The closure of Muppet Vision 3D comes at a time when Disney is already facing criticism for rising ticket prices and the loss of classic experiences. Many families see these changes as evidence that Disney is drifting away from its all-American roots and prioritizing profit over tradition.

Recent controversies over cost increases and the removal of beloved attractions have sparked heated debates online. Fans point out that long-standing park staples like Muppet Vision 3D offered affordable, family-friendly entertainment with broad appeal—something many feel is increasingly rare at Disney parks today.

As Disney shifts toward high-tech thrill rides and new intellectual properties, critics worry that future generations may never experience the timeless magic that made the parks special. For some, the end of Muppet Vision 3D is more than just the loss of a show—it’s a sign of a changing America, where nostalgia and tradition are too often left behind.
