The Church of the Redeemer, an Episcopal congregation in Sarasota, reached this significant membership number on February 16, through the baptisms of two infants, Casey Jane Clegg and Ruby Mae Spears. Their addition to the church's rolls brought the membership to an exact count of 3,001, symbolizing a continuance of vitality and growth within the church.

Significant Achievements Amid Wider Decline

While The Episcopal Church nationally faces a decline in membership, dropping from more than 2 million in 2010 to approximately 1.547 million in 2023, the Church of the Redeemer stands out with its increasing congregation. This growth is particularly notable given that just last year, the church saw 150 new memberships, with an additional 47 individuals joining earlier this year.

To commemorate reaching the 3,000-member mark, a celebratory event featuring gold balloons inscribed with "3000" and "3001" was held. This festive atmosphere reflected both the joy and the spiritual significance of the occasion.

Fr. Charleston Wilson, a key leader at the Church of the Redeemer, attributes this success to the congregation’s spiritual commitment. “The hand of God is clearly at work at Redeemer, and we give thanks to God for this incredible milestone. Now our focus is on doubling down on making new Christians and making all Christians new,” he said.

He further explained the church's growth philosophy by emphasizing the centrality of Jesus in their outreach and community activities. “Jesus lies at the center of all we do at Redeemer, and that may be our ‘secret sauce,’ so to speak,” Wilson noted.

The connection that members feel to their faith and community plays a crucial role in attracting and retaining congregants. “I think Redeemer is growing because people who are connected to this parish feel a very deep, personal, and real connection to the compassionate Christ — to the Jesus of the Bible,” Wilson added.

Looking Forward with New Episcopal Leadership

The broader Episcopal community is also undergoing significant changes. Last year, Rev. Sean Rowe was installed as the new presiding bishop, during which he set a vision for unity and renewal across the church. "We’re not a collection of dioceses and institutions, a collection of the ways of doing things. We are one church, one church in Jesus Christ,” Rowe declared at his installation.

He elaborated on the importance of the church's mission to proclaim both in words and deeds the life-transforming resurrection of Jesus as a constant goal. “This work, the work of proclaiming in word and deed that Jesus’ resurrection and life is the work to which God has called The Episcopal Church, now and always, as one church, together,” he affirmed.
