A former agnostic engineer who once doubted religious claims now believes near-death experiences offer compelling support for Christian teachings.

John Burke, now a pastor and author, says his deep dive into more than 1,500 near-death experience accounts led him to discover consistent parallels with biblical descriptions of the afterlife, Faith Wire reported.

Burke, who once worked in engineering and studied with a rational, evidence-driven mindset, considered himself skeptical of any spiritual claims. During a recent podcast appearance, he explained that he had always asked tough questions but found few satisfying answers about faith and the afterlife.

“How do you know? Is there any evidence? Why does that make sense?” he recalled asking, noting that his analytical mind couldn't reconcile with what he saw as the unverifiable nature of religious belief. For a time, he concluded that while Jesus might have been a historical figure, there was no hard evidence behind claims of divinity.

That perspective began to change when his father was diagnosed with cancer. During visits to the hospital, Burke noticed a book about near-death experiences (NDEs) on his father’s bedside table that piqued his curiosity.

Unlikely Inspiration at a Hospital Bedside

Burke picked up the book and started reading, expecting to dismiss it. Instead, he found himself deeply engaged. He said he couldn’t put it down and that the material “might be the evidence I’ve been looking for.”

This experience became the starting point for a years-long exploration into near-death accounts from around the world. Burke eventually left his career in engineering to become a pastor and devote his efforts to understanding and sharing these stories.

He began to read the Bible in earnest, and he reported that discovering historical prophecies that had come true helped solidify his belief in Christ, further deepening his transformation from skeptic to believer.

In his research, Burke studied more than 1,500 near-death experience reports, documenting recurring themes that he says closely resemble biblical depictions of heaven. He compiled many of these findings in his books, including the recent release "Imagine the God of Heaven."

He noted that as many as 5% of people have reportedly had such experiences, adding that many of these accounts share striking similarities. According to Burke, elements such as seeing a being of light, encountering beauty and peace beyond human comprehension, and leaving one’s physical body while observing real-world events are frequent in these narratives.

One of the cases Burke found particularly persuasive involves a woman from the 1990s who, during an experience where she had no recorded heartbeat or brain activity, recalled floating above her hospital room and noticing a red sticker on top of a ceiling fan. After returning to consciousness, she described the details to a skeptical staff member, who later confirmed the sticker's existence.

Weighing Evidence and Interpretation

Burke emphasized that not all near-death stories are to be taken literally, noting instead that these individuals are often trying to describe something “multidimensional.” He said it’s important to understand that people interpret these experiences through the lens of their own understanding.

Despite those limitations, he cited one study where 92% of statements made by individuals during NDEs were deemed to be completely accurate, and another 6% were mostly accurate. For a man trained in scientific thinking, those figures carried weight.

“This is grounded in our reality. This is not hallucination,” Burke said, reflecting on how the measurable accuracy of these testimonies helped convince him of their legitimacy and connection to something real and profound.

Unexpected Insights From the Visually Impaired

Another case that left a lasting impression on Burke involves people born blind. He said these individuals often report seeing events and beings during their near-death experiences that match closely with what sighted people describe.

He found this particularly powerful, given that these individuals had no known visual frame of reference. The consistency of their narratives added further credibility to the idea that these moments are more than neurological phenomena.

“They report all the same things as sighted people,” Burke explained, underlining how these accounts defy conventional explanations and suggest a quality of perception beyond this world.

A Personal Journey From Doubt to Belief

Ultimately, Burke’s journey from agnostic engineer to Christian pastor was driven by an unlikely mix of personal loss, intellectual curiosity and spiritual searching. It started at his father’s hospital bedside and expanded into years of active inquiry.

Through his investigations, Burke concluded that NDEs offer not just anecdotal insights but clear alignment with scriptures detailing heaven and the soul’s journey. While he cautions against taking every detail literally, he believes the common patterns across stories provide strong evidence for spiritual truths.
