FBI launches Seattle probe into alleged religious targeting at protests

The FBI is investigating claims of religious targeting in Seattle following a conservative rally that sparked conflict and led to multiple arrests.

According to Fox News, the bureau’s involvement follows dueling demonstrations at Seattle City Hall, where members of a conservative Christian group gathered in response to comments by Mayor Bruce Harrell that blamed Christians for violence days earlier during a separate protest.

During a press conference on Tuesday, FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said he had initiated a formal inquiry into allegations of violence directed at religious groups in connection with recent events in Seattle. The decision came hours after tensions erupted downtown during a protest dubbed “Rattle in Seattle.”

The rally, organized by conservative Christian groups, began at 5 p.m. Tuesday on the 4th Avenue steps of Seattle City Hall. It was meant as a response to criticism leveled by Mayor Harrell, who previously attributed weekend violence to Christian demonstrators and anarchists.

Two opposing groups gathered near the city building, prompting authorities to close nearby streets as law enforcement monitored the scene. According to a Seattle Police Department release, the streets were reopened before 8 p.m.

Weekend Protest Sparked Mayor’s Controversial Remarks

The friction began on Saturday during a "Don’t Mess With Our Kids" rally organized by MayDayUSA at Cal Anderson Park—a group that describes itself as defending conservative family values. A counter-protest by pro-LGBTQ supporters reportedly grew chaotic, leading to clashes between groups.

Seattle police made 23 arrests during the Saturday confrontation. Organizers of the counter-protest said the conservative group instigated the conflict, while the Christian group blamed anti-fascist demonstrators, often referred to as Antifa, for the violence.

Following the weekend episode, Harrell accused Christian demonstrators of triggering the conflict with rhetoric that he said opposed the values of an inclusive and welcoming city. He also cited anarchists who had reportedly joined the counter-protest and contributed to the upheaval.

Christian Rally Sparks New Protests and Arrests

In response, the “Rattle in Seattle” protest was launched to denounce the mayor’s position. It drew demonstrators who said they were unfairly targeted for their religious beliefs and political views. Organizers condemned Harrell’s public statement, claiming it misrepresented their motives.

Tuesday’s event escalated when counter-protesters showed up, leading to eight arrests for assault, though police said no injuries were reported. No specific affiliations of the arrested individuals were released.

“Following the MayDay USA worship event,” said organizers of Tuesday’s rally, “Mayor Harrell dared to issue a press release blaming Christians for premeditated violence.” They accused city authorities of failing to maintain law and order.

Officials, Faith Leaders Offer Diverging Views

Harrell defended his remarks, saying that the city’s LGBTQ+ community deserves protection from what he termed provocations staged by far-right elements in areas known for being inclusive spaces. He reiterated his view that anarchists who joined the counter-demonstrators were also responsible for the violence and prompted the early closure of the event.

“Seattle is proud of our reputation as a welcoming city,” Harrell stated, noting that the Christian-led rally was positioned to amplify divisive messaging in the heart of a historically LGBTQ+ neighborhood.

Several faith leaders backed the mayor’s stance. Rev. Dr. Patricia L. Hunter criticized the rally for using religion as a cover for promoting fear and division, stating that true teachings encourage love and acceptance of all people, including those of diverse sexual and gender identities.

Federal Investigation Underway as Tensions Remain

Bongino emphasized federal concern over the reported incidents, saying, “Freedom of religion isn’t a suggestion.” He added that the bureau would take all credible claims seriously and ensure constitutional rights are upheld.

The FBI has not confirmed the scope of the investigation or how long it may take. Seattle police have not identified whether the arrested individuals in either protest were acting on ideological motives.

As investigations and public debate continue, residents and leaders alike remain divided over the role of political speech, religious expression, and protest culture in the city’s public life.
