Former Mob Leader Embraces Christianity After Prison Life Turns Him Away From Crime

In an unexpected turn of events, former New York mafia boss Michael Franzese shares his transformation from a life of organized crime to becoming a committed Christian, in the new docuseries "American Godfathers: The Five Families."

Michael Franzese narrates his journey from mob boss to devout Christian, shedding light on his dramatic life changes and newfound faith, Fox News reported.

Michael Franzese's formative years were shadowed by the hidden truths of his family's mob affiliations, particularly those of his father, John "Sonny" Franzese, a notable figure in the Colombo Crime Family. His childhood was marked by frequent police raids and investigations aimed at his father, sparking early suspicions about the true nature of his father’s activities.

From College Dreams To Mob Realities

Destined for a career in medicine, Michael initially enrolled as a pre-med student at Hofstra University. His plans, however, took a drastic turn in the mid-1970s. Faced with his father’s long-term imprisonment, Michael chose to abandon his education and follow in his father’s footsteps into the mafia, aiming to support and ultimately free his father from incarceration.

On a fateful Halloween night in 1975, Michael Franzese formally entered the mafia during a secretive and solemn oath-taking ceremony. This initiation marked his transition from an ordinary civilian to a 'made man,' profoundly embedding him within the organized criminal environment.

A Spiral Into Criminal Ventures

Immersed in the mafia’s activities, Michael quickly rose through the ranks, becoming notorious for orchestrating elaborate tax scams, particularly within the gasoline industry, generating vast amounts of illicit income. Becoming increasingly aware of the perilous nature of his lifestyle, Michael contemplated his future upon marrying Camille Garcia in 1985, beginning to see the grim realities his mother faced during his father’s absence.

Reality collided with Michael’s world harshly in the late 1980s when he was arrested and convicted for his role in these gasoline tax frauds. It was in prison, between 1991 and 1994, where significant changes began to take root. Influenced by his wife and her family, Michael found refuge and solace in Christianity, a stark contrast to his previous life’s creed.

Mafia Departure and Spiritual Reawakening

Upon his release, Michael made the courageous decision to quit the mafia in 1995, transforming his fear and experiences into lessons to share publicly. His past filled with regrettable actions and a desire to lead a better life fueled his decision to help others understand the dangers of such a life. Quietly, he planned his exit to ensure no harm would come to his peers or family, especially his father.

Reflecting on his tumultuous past, Michael remarked, “I wish certain things never happened,” highlighting deep remorse over his actions and those he witnessed. Despite the challenges and threats associated with leaving the mafia, Michael's Christian faith grew stronger, becoming a cornerstone of his new life.

Public Speaking and Life of Redemption

Now a public speaker, Michael Franzese travels widely, recounting his story not just as a narrative of crime but as a testament to personal transformation and the power of faith. His talks draw on his extensive experiences as a former criminal to educate, warn, and inspire his audiences about the potential for change, regardless of one's past.

His father, Sonny Franzese, who remained involved with the mafia throughout his life, lived to see his son make these changes before passing away in 2020 at the age of 103.

In conclusion, Michael Franzese's life is a profound example of personal redemption and the power of change. From a significant mafia figure to a devout Christian and public speaker, his journey reflects a deep transformation influenced by faith, love, and a fervent desire to do good despite a past marred by crime and fear.
