Former Newcastle priest convicted of abuse dies in prison

John Sidney Denham, one of the most notorious child abusers in Australia’s history, has died while serving his sentence in a New South Wales prison.

ABC News reported that Denham, an 82-year-old former Catholic priest and teacher, was serving a lengthy prison term for decades of child sexual abuse that led to national investigations and played a role in establishing Australia’s royal commission into institutional abuse.

Denham passed away on Friday inside the hospital wing at Long Bay jail, according to confirmation provided by prison authorities on Thursday. His death marks the end of a criminal case that spanned decades and affected dozens of families and survivors across Australia.

Much of Denham’s abuse occurred during the 1970s and early 1980s while he was employed at St Pius X College in Newcastle, which is now known as Trinity College. He held dual positions of influence as both a priest and an educator during that time.

Strike Force Georgiana Begins Investigating Clergy Abuse

In 2008, police launched Strike Force Georgiana, the country’s first dedicated operation targeting sexual abuse by clergy members. This task force ultimately led to criminal charges against Denham after multiple survivors came forward with allegations.

Two years later, in 2010, Denham was convicted and sentenced to 13 years and 10 months in prison after being found guilty of abusing 39 male students. His sentence was extended in 2015 after additional survivors raised fresh allegations, resulting in further convictions.

Kristi Faber, the former detective who led the strike force, played a key role in building the case against Denham. She described him as “one of the worst” offenders ever identified within the church and the country.

Abuse Resulted in Widespread Harm and Tragedy

In total, 60 individuals filed formal complaints of abuse by Denham. However, investigators with Georgiana spoke to many other survivors who either chose not to lodge official charges or were unrelated to the original cases.

Several of Denham’s victims have since died by suicide. The impact of these deaths was significant and, in one case, influenced the establishment of the national royal commission into child sexual abuse within institutions.

Faber acknowledged the profound toll Denham’s crimes had on the lives of countless Australians. “The grief and devastation don't go away for these families and these survivors,” she said.

Church Acknowledges Failures and Expresses Regret

The Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle stated in response to Denham’s death. A spokesperson described him as a person whose roles gave him repeated opportunities to access and harm children in his care.

“Denham was a prolific and notorious child-abuser whose role as a priest and teacher gave him access to his victims,” the diocese said. The spokesperson extended sympathy to those affected by his actions, saying, “Our thoughts are with all those impacted.”

The Church also acknowledged that the news of Denham’s death may reignite pain among those already suffering. “The death of an abuser is likely to raise issues for their survivors, in relation to the pain and harm they and their families live with,” the spokesperson added.

Survivors Played a Critical Role in Securing Justice

Faber emphasized the courage of the survivors who came forward to speak about their experiences. “For them to come forward and be so brave and then to convict a man that could have gone on and continued to offend, they should be very proud of themselves,” she said.

The survivors’ testimony not only placed Denham behind bars but also played a critical role in broader efforts to reform systems that allowed such abuses to continue for years. Their voices contributed to deeper public awareness and institutional investigations.

Although Denham’s prison sentence and death conclude the legal chapter of his case, the emotional and societal aftermath continues. His actions left deep scars that are still being felt across multiple communities today.
