Funeral held for victim of Manhattan office shooting, NYPD prayer vigil next

In a week marked by sorrow and resilience, New Yorkers gathered to honor victims lost in a fatal office building shooting that shook Midtown Manhattan on Monday night.

According to CBS New York, Four lives were taken in a targeted shooting at 345 Park Ave., prompting city-wide mourning, funeral services, and an active investigation into the shooter’s path from Las Vegas to New York.

The attack occurred at the Rudin Management building, which houses the NFL’s headquarters, and claimed the lives of four people: Julia Hyman, NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, security officer Aland Etienne, and Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner. An NFL employee was critically wounded in the incident and remains hospitalized.

Shooter Had a Mental Health History and CTE Note

The gunman, a 27-year-old man who traveled from Las Vegas, died by suicide after the shooting. Investigators believe he attempted to target the NFL’s offices inside the building, and a note referencing CTE—a brain condition often seen in contact sport athletes—was later found by authorities.

The New York Police Department is pursuing leads in both New York and Nevada. One investigative team is examining the guns used in the attack and those found in the suspect’s vehicle. Another NYPD team is executing a search warrant at the individual's Las Vegas residence.

Detectives are also questioning a reported acquaintance of the shooter who allegedly helped purchase components of the AR-style rifle used in the attack.

Funeral for Julia Hyman Draws Community Support

The first victim to be laid to rest was 27-year-old Julia Hyman, an employee of Rudin Management. Her funeral was held Wednesday morning, two days after the tragedy, drawing family, friends, and colleagues to celebrate the life of a woman described as adventurous and deeply loved.

One mourner at the service said Hyman “was her truth,” reflecting a life lived with confidence and sincerity. Her uncle highlighted the pain of a promising life cut short, telling those gathered that, despite the violent loss, her memory would live on through how others choose to live.

Flags across New York State have been lowered to half-staff to honor the victims. Mayor Eric Adams' office described Hyman as a woman with great talent and spirit, noting that the world was robbed of her presence far too early.

Prayer Service Planned for Slain Officer Islam

Also killed in the incident was NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, who was working off-duty as a security guard when the shooting occurred. The department has confirmed that his death is being treated as one occurring in the line of duty.

On Tuesday, Islam's body was escorted through the city in a dignified transfer ceremony, which included a police motorcade. The following morning, city and state leaders joined officers at the NYPD’s 47th Precinct for a roll call to honor him.

Islam, who was weeks away from the birth of his third child, will be posthumously promoted to detective. A prayer service will be held Thursday at Parkchester Jame Masjid in the Bronx, where large crowds are expected, and security measures such as barricades are being prepared.

Families of Other Victims Share Grief and Remembrance

Aland Etienne, who worked as a building security officer, was also killed. During a labor union news conference hosted by 32BJ SEIU, his brother Smith Etienne described Aland as a devoted family man who took pride in helping shield others from harm.

“Always up on time, always taking overtime,” his brother said about Etienne’s dedication to keeping New Yorkers safe. He was remembered as a brother, son, and outstanding father by those close to him.

The final victim, Wesley LePatner, a Blackstone executive, was mourned privately by loved ones. In a statement released Tuesday, LePatner’s family requested privacy as they grieve and extended condolences to the families of others affected by the tragedy.

Candlelight Vigil and Ongoing Investigation Highlight City's Response

On Tuesday evening, a vigil was held in Bryant Park where relatives, friends, and strangers gathered by candlelight to remember the lives lost. Emotional tributes were shared, as the city stood united in grief and resilience amid one of its deadliest recent shootings.

Mayor Adams said in an interview Wednesday morning that authorities continue to explore the suspect’s motives. He confirmed that officers are collecting evidence from the gunman's home and vehicle and analyzing the firearms used in the killing.

Governor Kathy Hochul also remarked on the collective mourning felt statewide, stating that New Yorkers could feel the heartbreak of those impacted by the attack.
